Title: Large Murano Paperweight
Post by: mhgcgolfclub on June 29, 2010, 06:44:24 PM
I am pretty sure this large paperweight is Murano possibly AVEM with the latticinio canes and the gold adventurine.

Diameter 3.75" or 9.5 cm, weight 950 gm, polished flat base.

Any further information would be great and confirmation of ID

Thanks Roy

It looks more like the Fratelli Toso latticino scramble pw to me. I have never seen the red bits, though, and the canes seem a bit flatter than I'm accustomed to seeing. These things make me wonder if it might be a look-alike. If it is, it is a very good one. Someone that knows more about pws than I should be able to verify if it is Murano or not.

I'm fairly certain it is Murano - but not sure which factory.

You know, I'm with Anita on this one, as I've not seen the red transparent canes (?) before either.  Also I think there are some cane chunks (blue & white) that look less than Murano.  On the other hand, there are things in this weight that scream typical Murano scramble.  Is there a small area that has black "bits" in photo #4?

Interesting ..... Lily

This weight also has the transparent red stuff in it and it is not (imho) Murano although the label would want you to believe otherwise.

Thank you for your replies. It does seem to be very interesting, as far as I thought it had to be a Murano maker but which one.

If its a look alike who else may have made it ? my knowledge of Murano glass is just about zero so happy to except what the experts think.

To try and help I have added some close ups.

Thanks for all you help

I think that both Roy's weight and the one Lily linked to on eBay are Murano.

Lily's point about "the transparent red stuff" would be a good point except that in the eBay example, although the main photo is not too sharp, the red coating around the millefiori cane is not the same as in Roy's weight where it is used as a main feature for both a cane and as "threading".

I don't know about the maker of either weight - or, for that matter, the age. But I suspect Roy's could be a later 20th century one as transparent colours do not seem to feature too much in the literature that I have seen where Murano items from, say, the 1930s through 1970s are shown.

Thank you Kevin

Looking at the base I would agree with late 20th century as there is only a small amount of wear

Thanks Roy

Well, Kev H, I am now in complete agreement that Roy's paperweight is Murano, even with the 'transparent red stuff'! ;)  Roy, take a look at Murano Tutti Frutti bowl? in the Murano Glass Section of the GMB.  Lots of red stuff in that piece and I wouldn't question its origins at all.

As for the weight I posted in Roy's thread, it may have Murano canes in it, but it is (imho) not a product of Murano, just a fake and a poor one at that.

My best ..... Lily  :)

It's ok to have an opinion that something may not be as advertised, but are there any specific reasons behind the opinion that it is "a fake and a poor one at that"?

Without any comments to back up such an opinion, and especially if it is felt that the canes (etc) may be genuine, we should always be careful of publicly stating that an item for sale is "a fake". Do you think that the weight was simply not made in Murano and therefore the addition of the label is the only misleading factor?

KevH, you are correct in pointing out one should be able to back up why one may feel something is not as it may be advertised.  The following are my reasons for my humble/honest opinion regarding the weight I attached to this thread:

1.  Untidy cane set up.  Murano weights generally have a neater set up with canes being more upright and better positioned.
2.  Base appears irregular and not the very flat/well-polished base I have come to associate with vintage Murano weights.
3.  Generic label applied to numerous "Murano" glass products of questionable origin.
4.  I had a weight very much like this and it was not Murano. (Nothing like being able to see it up close and personal! 8))

Please know that I am in no way saying the seller has purposely misrepresented the item.  All I have shared is that "in my humble/honest opinion", the advertised Vintage Murano Paperweight is of questionable origin.

If I have misspoken, please let me know as no disrespect was intended.  I am part of the GMB because of my love of glass--particularly paperweights :) and my great desire to learn more about my passion (or poison >:D).  When I first started here, I collected because I was drawn to them; I knew nothing!  The opportunities the GMB and the GF have given me to "talk with/listen to" people from all over the world who know so much about this beautiful world of glass has been an amazing journey.  Along the way, I think I have even made some friends.

Respectfully .... Lily
