Title: Chance carriage plates

I purchased three plates still in the box with the wrapping from a second hand store in the US. The back of the box reads 18th & 19th Century Carriages. W.E. Chance & Co, LTD Smethwick, 40 Birmingham. Does anyone know when they were manufactured? I have searched the internet and have not been able to locate any information on the plates.

It's in the book available from that site though: Chance Expressions by David P Encill. Essential to anyone who collects or deals in Chance Glass.  :thup:

What is interesting is that is not the name of the main English company, which was Chance Brothers and Co. Ltd. Hopefully David will pop in. I will nag him if he doesn't. A picture of the back of the box would be good please.

Interesting to compare this listing with the one in the Fashion through the ages set I had a while back: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,20804.0.html which just says Chance Glass (British Made).

The earliest date I have for this series is 1962 and they were still present in a 1969 price list, but not in the 1976 list.

W E Chance & Co. Ltd was a subsidiary of Chance Brothers - it had quite a long history and was originally set up as a separate company. After 1923, it appears to have been bought under the control of Chance Bros. making, amongst other things, petrol pump globes and other blown ware. Around this time the firm appears to have moved from Oldbury Road to the company headquarters at Spon Lane. So to be strictly accurate, all Fiestaware was actually made by W E Chance & Co. Ltd - see p.34, 2nd para. of my book.

Ahh, missed that. Hence the accuracy for the US/export market.
