A chance(!) find by my son whilst sorting through some wine-making equipment given him by his grandmother... this is a glass syphon tube, boxed, with the original signature Chance logo, and the maker given as Chance Glass Ltd., Pickersleigh Avenue, Malvern Link, Worcs. A Google search brings up their website with a page of their history explaining how they came to be: http://www.chanceglass.co.uk/?p=history.

Originally started by Chance Bros in 1947 to expand the tubing division. The interchangeable glass syringe was also developed there about that time. Dating is difficult, but it appears the company kept the 'Chance' logo throughout the Pilks reign. I have a couple of Hydrometers, and both of the plastic cases have the Pilks logo as well, so these date between 1981 and 1992. This tube is probably before 1981.
Guess who provided them with the logo for its web site? :-X

In 1981, the Smethwick plant was closed with all flat glass production being absorbed by Pilkington's St Helens factories. Remaining glass tube processing was moved to Malvern where the operation was incorporated as an arms-length subsidiary of Pilkington, under the old name Chance Brothers Ltd.
In 1992, during a period of rationalisation at Pilkington, Chance once again became an independent company, changing its registered name to Chance Glass Limited, but retaining the historical Chance logo.
If Chance Glass Ltd. was only formed in 1992, this one can't pre-date that surely?

Yes, it would then appear this was produced after 1992. Going by the packaging it looks so much older.

I was thinking it did too David, that was why I was surprised to find the later date and felt it worth posting here as a reference. Using the older logo and that flat green plain box makes it look older than the 1990s.

Weird. The early "Chance" logo being used would have had me thinking it was a good bit older too, Anne, but if you actually read the instructions on the side of the box, the clumsy English and bad punctuation suggest something much more recent.....
(I'm leaving, before I get shot - I do need to eat.)
