Title: Newly acquired vase. Help identifying. Czech?
Post by: george_slusar on July 11, 2010, 04:30:26 PM
Hello,

I recently bought this vase in Prague and have been looking for information about the maker and the value. I did some looking around and Palda seems to be coming up. It is 10.5" tall. The sides taper up from 4.25" to 4.75"

Any information is greatly appreciated.

What a beautiful design, I'm quite jealous! (btw - it might help if you put Czech somewhere in the subject to attract the sort of knowledgeable forum members that really, really know their Czech glass)

Have added Czech? to your subject line for you Todd as you won't have been able to. You can only edit your own posts for an hour after making them, after that you need to ask a Moderator to do it for you. :) Welcome to the board.

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone has any information about this vase?

Thank you,

May we see an image of the underside?  Is there any age wear to the base?

Hello,

I hope this helps. I don't know anything about glass. There appear to be some light scratches on the bottom but that is all I can tell. Thank you,

Todd

Please have patience - I'm sure we'll get there in the end - it's a beautiful piece and very well-made. I can see the top rim is polished and bevelled - nobody is likely to go to the trouble of that standard of finish on something that isn't good. It's still a bit difficult to see how the base is finished, though. A photograph taken at an angle would help.
Is it completely flat?
Is there a "well" of some sort in the middle?

We don't "do" valuations here - they're very subjective.
In the end, something is only ever worth what somebody is willing to pay for it.
(but I think a few folk might like to own this very much.)

I apologize if I seem overly anxious. I really love the piece and am excited to find out more about it. The value doesn't really matter to me since I love it enough to have brought it home from Prague. I will try to get some more pictures of it this evening. Off the top of my had the bottom is flat but will get that angle in a picture.

Thank you,

Todd

It is tough to tell without handling it, but the work is a little reminiscent of Karl Palda's Deco era output....  Age wear on the base would help to determine age, but it is tough from pictures.....  I do not know who else, if anyone, produced this type of work, or if it is being reproduced.

Jindrich may know more when he comes along.....

Craig

PS - no reason to apologize.....  we all get excited about pieces....  it just takes time for all of the right people to come along sometimes....

The excitement of a really beautiful piece of glass is something we all understand here Todd.  :ooh:
I'd love to get my mitts on it too - are the edges of the sides polished and bevelled too? They look as if they might be.

They have increased my lust for this vase about 100%, not sure if that's a help or not!  :pb:

While Czech is being mentioned, I was also wondering just a little about French - I'm fairly sure Baccarat used black enamel panels in some of their deco designs. Though my inclination is still towards Czech, neither of these are my areas. I'm just being nosey.

Could this be a Karl Palda 1930s Czech vase?

I love the lines of it. I was instantly attracted to it. This is my first piece of deco pieces I own.

Silly me...  I just noticed that Craig mentioned Karl Palda a bit earlier.  Sorry for repeating  :-[.  (I still think it's Karl Palda though...  I've seen a decanter and glasses with the same coloring and geometric (triangular) design.)

I am reconsidering my suggestion on this piece of glass, and I am now thinking it may be later production Czech, and not early Palda.  In my earlier post I stated I did not know if it was produced by anyone else, or being reproduced at any point.  Here is the reason for my reconsideration.

I came across an auction out of the Czech Republic for a vase being represented as a

Palda Vase
 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Museum-Quality-Czech-Art-Deco-Karel-Palda-Rare-30-Vase-/380251094932?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5888bb3f94)
The striking aspect of the piece shown in the auction is that the shape of the vase, and also dimensions of the vase, are identical to 2 - 1960's Pavel Hlava vases I own which bear an Exbor acid stamp. The shape of the piece is quite unique, and I find it highly unlikely that both Palda in the 30's, and Hlava in the 60's used the identical form. This has led me to the strong suspicion that the Palda being offered in the auction is in fact later production Czech glass (unmarked Exbor?), which then leads me to question time frame of this piece of glass..... I would find it much more likely that a piece of later production glass in this manner would be available in Prague, as opposed to an original piece of Palda....

Without handling the piece it is nearly impossible to accurately assess age wear underfoot.

My strong inclination at this point is that it is later production, and not Palda, but in the manner of Palda's work.

It is still a striking piece of glass that I would love to own.....

These images are my images of a third piece I owned in the same shape as the "Palda" in the link above, which I sold.

I hope this all makes sense...

Craig
