Hi, could you please identify this tumbler. It is 5 inches in height and 2 and a half inches in width and weighs 12 ounces. It is of solid colour and thicker at the base, and does have a ground out pontil but is has a strange straw mark going through it (please see pic). Many thanks for any help.
-
Looks a bit like a Whitefriars bark vase but is so long since i have had one i cant remember what the base is like please remember not all W/Fs has a polished pontil , Emmi the WizzzKid will be along soon to put us right JP ex W/Fs collector , still into Powell .
-
thankyou for your reply i think it is a drinking tumbler of some sort as the rim is thinner than on a vase but i am grateful for any response and any suggestions on this ,any ideas on the mark to the base ?
-
One of the Forum members on whitefriars.com had a set of these (came in mixed colours) which had label on "Made in Italy". I am assuming yours is one of these. The rim does look much thinner than on a bark vase, and the "crimped" section at the top is definitely not indicative of a Whitefriars bark vase. As for a definitive maker, I just do not know. As a matter of interest, what is the diameter at the top?
-
hi thankyou for your reply emmi the diameter at the top is 3inches many thanks
-
I would say that diameter is more for a tumbler. The 6" Whitefriars Bark vase has a diameter of 2.75..........only a little narrower, but surprising how it makes a difference to the proportions!
-
thanks again for your reply ,yes i think its a tumbler as it is 5 inches high and weighs 12oz the only thing i have seen that is like it is on the whitefriars forum i searched tangerine tumbler and one came up it was a m series glacier tumbler in tangerine but im not saying thats what it is im just curious and trying to find out what it is ,thankyou for taking time to reply
-
The W/Fs flint glasses have a similar top thats what made me unsure , Emmi is more up to date than my aged humble self on W/Fs . jp :kissy:

thankyou for your imput john many thanks

Well I know the IS It upload to which you refer. As you can see, despite the comments, the voting is rather mixed to say the least. Having seen a full set of these with the Italian labels, I will stick with my original opinion.

your opinion is greatly appreciated emmi, im no expert and i am just interested to find out what i can about it.many thanks for your time.tracey

An earlier topic on the board shows how tricky these are: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,4692.0.html

Thanks for that link Anne, actually it was Vidfletch who bought the Italian ones at Cambridge a few years ago, and I was there with him.!!
This morning I did a Bark versus Glacier range reccy! The Bark texture is totally different to the Glacier range texture ( I wish I had one of the tumblers to photograph alongside a Bark vase to illustrate). Tracey's tumbler has the Bark-ish texture as opposed to the glacier texture, which rules out for me it being a colour version of the W/F tumbler. Also the colour of the tumbler under debate, is definitely not a Whitefriars Tangerine to my eye. So, at the risk of being boring, I still stick to my original position.! LOL!

once again thankyou for the time and imput, can i just add that the thicker glass to the base goes to a deep orange almost red and it is like that almost 2 inches up the tumbler i dont know if that helps anymore.kind regards tracey

I just purchased a bark textured tumbler which looks very Whitefriars-ish indeed to me. This has prompted me to have a search through the various threads on this board, and what a mystery these tumblers seem to be! I'm posting pics here, as the rim looks very similar to the tumbler at the top of this thread. Size is 3.5 inches tall by 3.25 inches diameter.

Looks good to me wayne (love tango peices)...although need a Whitefriars expert to confirm...
-
This one Wayne looks more like the real deal to me, main thing for me is the colour which is nice and even ( no changing of tone) BUT, I still have not seen one by Whitefriars 200% confirmed in Tangerine............so? Let's wait and see!
-
Thanks Kane and Emmi for your comments. It certainly does look the part, but I guess we will have to see one of these with a label to be certain.

Could the posters be Stelvia Italy?
