Title: J C Cottle - importer or glassmaker or restaurant business?

Can anyone add anything to my meagre knowledge of J C Cottle please? All I've found so far is a number of registered designs dating from the 1920s/1930s, such as these: http://www.inchicore-pressedglass-museum.org/J%20C%20Cottle1.htm and one on a bottle (Rd No. 742849) I picked up myself earlier this week.

Was he an importer? If so, does anyone know where he imported from?

Was he a glassmaker? If so, where was he based?

Or was he some other type of businessman? I've found mentions of James Cottle Limited,  a cafe and restaurant business in the Liverpool and Manchester areas in the right timescale. Given that the registrations we've seen so far are for bottles, could this company be the missing link, registering designs for bottles for their cafes and restaurants.

James Cottle Limited became part of the Aerated Bread Company in the 1920s, which itself became a part of the Weston Bakery & Food Group in 1955, later Allied Bakeries, and now Associated British Foods.

National Archives catalogue gives the following info covering 1920:

Companies House don't have any record of this number in their online database.

Sooooo, could J C Cottle and James Cottle of the restaurants be one and the same? Can anyone add anything at all to these thoughts please?

    • In my experience all JC Cottle's registrations are for these standard cordial decanters.   He may have been a factor/importer in his own right, but I think it more likely that he was a director/manager of another, probably Lang, and submitted these registrations in his own name.   A check at Kew should provide the explanation.

    There's a manufacturer entry on the Great Glass website (http://www.great-glass.co.uk)

    London, England (1920s - 1937)

    Joseph Kilvert Clifton Cottle of Napier Avenue, Fulham, later moved to Upper Richmond Road, East Sheen (died 20th April 1937). Importer of (probably mostly Czech) glassware (46 designs registered from 1st February 1927 to 17th April 1936)"

    Would seem to agree with Bernard.

    One of my neighbours acquired a few of the decanters this week, and I've been checking out the RD numbers.

    Thanks Chris, I'd missed that ref on Great Glass, but had received the info from Thomas at Inchicore.  :thup:

    We'd like to gather pictures of all the Rd No. pieces registered to JC Cottle - as there's so few of them it should be do-able. Could you persuade your neighbour to allow you to take photos of them for the collection please?  :X:

    Sorry, only one left.  728965 of 27 Apr 1927.  Photos attached.  Neck and stopper both ground to fit snugly.

    Didn't realise they were of interest to GMB.  There was another with an RD number but it got sold at a car boot yesterday.  Rectangular, with similar punted bottom and pressed diamond pattern, like a lot of Libochovice output, for example.

    Thanks Chris, I've not see that one before. It's a shame about the ones we missed out on but hopefully they'll surface again somewhere.  :thup:

    Anything with an RD no on is of interest for the reference album here please:

    Groovy!  I'll try and take a photo every time I see an RD number.

    Don't suppose there's a way of viewing/sorting the album in alphanumeric order, is there?

    Yep, at the top right of the album thumbnail page on the same line as the 06 Registered Designs is a set of sort options. Sort by title ascending (the + sign) should do it for you. :thup:
