I bought this over a month ago. Have been doing my usual searches, mainly through the scandi glass sites. However! I am still perplexed as to whether too call this a Bowl, Vase or Jug!!!???...It was listed a a jug. I can understand why from the sellers point of view as he was probably now completely over the daunting task of the classification part of it. Such as I am.
Now down to this piece. The dimensions are: just over 7.5cm high, the base is just over 9cm in length with the rim being just over 7cm in length. It has almost a 'tangerine' colour to it. The base is not completely flat and it has some good wear to the outer edges. Probably 20-30 yrs old in my guesstimate. The confusing part is the 4 pulled bits on the rim!
I cannot think of the purpose of this???...they are to small for a jug for pouring. And the then the reasoning of why you would need 4 is beyond me. So i will rule out jug! Which leaves the question. IS IT A BOWL OR bothery VASE???!!!... :hb2: (excuse my language - i have no more hair to pull out!!!)
Any thoughts as to what this might be? An do you think it is scandi also? May it be missing some other bit or was it supposed to be with something else?
;D

Hard to see the colours, especially against the blue. I wonder if Vas Vitreum (Swedish) might be a possibility as the colours look similar (possibly). I haven't a clue what it is but function in Scandi glass doesn't usually concern me too much unless it's a chandelier. Vas Vitreum is newer but their pieces seem to wear quickly.

Forgot the flash was off. Will take some pics later so the colour comes out better.

?? for a tea light candle?? I have no idea... :ha:
-
To big for a tea light, too small for a vase and a little odd for a bowl! :24:

Here are some better pics...

Much clearer pictures, thanks. I take back the Vas Vitreum, though. It doesn't strike a bell with me. An interesting search.

It looks like it's a little pot used for pouring something on food... but what? Sauce? Cream?

?????????????????????
*butter dish* for Lobster ---or Maybe a *Finger Bowl*---- --- Maybe it goes the other way around, and what looks like little spouts actually are nothing but design -- in the base. Have you tried to flip it over just to see what it looks like....
I have NO clue :wsh:

Yes antique...i have turned it over about 6,000 times :phew: LOL. I still can't decide what to call it!!!???...It was listed for quite a long time and it intrigues me. The price kept going down and I thought it was a reasonable price for a research piece. It was under $20 with postage.
It's not that 'who is the maker???' at this point, but more of 'what the hell is it???!!!' :24:

I need to add...the colouring in this is absolutely gorgeous :sun:

Hi Kane - yes I saw that listed several times. Glad it is a nice piece of glass though - does it really need to be anything else? ;D

I've got problems with my monitor and my colours are weird and washed out, but was wondering if it looks anything at all like this Stumpf, Touvier and Violette salt, colour-wise? Is there a gold lustre to it?

How is the rim finished? If it's only roughly polished, perhaps the indenty bits were for accommodating wire mesh struts to support flowers?
Looks a bit impractical, washing-wise for anything food related...... Ink-well of some sort? Mustard?
If it's Art glass, of course, it does not have to be for anything but beauty. Though this does look as if it should be for something.
(modified message to put better pics in.)

May be the top to a decanter/bottle - also used to measure out and pour from?
Just thinking aloud ;D
-
What was *it* advertised as? anything? What did they know about it -- or nothing either? As in Unknown...
-
Hi jakgene, yes it was listed for a very long time. I was amazed no one else bought it.
It was listed as a jug, only because the seller didn't know what to list it as. But they did have the possibility that it was scandinavian. Which I tend to agree with.
The rim is polished and there is no markings from something being there originally. Even the 'spouts' have no scratchings to them.
I had considered that it may have been a decanter lid but the opening is just a little to large. The spouts are useless as a pourer.
For the use of food it just seems impractical for sauses, mustards and even salt.
Not sure about the gold lustring though chopin-liszt due to the 'tangerine' type colour combination.
Maybe I should just leave it as 'Art Glass' or an 'odd bowl'...come the day I decide to sell it that will be an entertaining ebay listing!!!...

I've seen some interesting oddball glass that was medical or scientific in original purpose. I got no idea though.
How much does it hold? Could it be a measuring cup of some kind? Have you tried pouring water or oil from the 4 spouts, is it handy and convenient if used that way? I never really found that more than one spout was necessary but as I looked around I saw a number of things, water bottles, pitchers, etc that had 4 spouts kinda like that.

No to all of the above cubby...LOL...i will check it on the weekend, but I doubt the pourers would be useful.

If we can't figure it out -- maybe try one of those sites that are exactly for that "What is it??"
http://55tools.blogspot.com/
Wonder If they would know.... ?

Thinking laterally - it reminds me of a fondue pot - I wonder if you had cutlery of some sort to go with it - say long handled teaspoons. You could use it to put a sauce - say Thousand Island dressing onto prawns or crayfish and each have you own spoon. Or perhaps long handled forks so you could dip the prawn directly into the sauce. Did I mention that I love seafood!!!!
Or as my father used to say - perhaps it is a wig-wam for a goose's bridle!

Another Gempo piece listed here on glassmessages...

I wonder if this a Japanese piece....
Could very well be Ahremck, hopefully find out soon...

Hatpin holder?

Seriously, Kane do you find attributing Japanese glass very difficult? Know of any good sites or books?

Ivo gets the award for the most creative 'what is it' response... :smg:
Hey ahremck, I seem to have a knack for Japanese Glass for some odd reason. Most of my research has come from ebay (labeled) pieces, owning so much of it over the years, although I sold pretty much all of it many years ago, and persuing the internet, mostly through obscure Japanese sites. As to book wise, no, there is not really anything out there in regards to Japanese Glass unfortunately.
I have listed in the Glass Reference section a Japanese site that contains many of the glass artists, especially those since the 60's. It is not very comprehensive unfortunately and not really updated. But it does have a biography of where they have worked for some of them.

I have a few more websites which I should put up here, which I will do when I pull the book out of the box.
I did some googling on Gempo and a lot of the earlier stuff seems to be Japanese Glass, which would not surprise me being seeing close to Australia and being a giftware importer (mass production and cheap). They also sold a lot of pottery as well. Some marked Germany. I assume they probably source there goods from other countries now due to cost (China, Taiwan etc)...

Well it looks like Gempo Giftware is no longer operating! So trying to find out what actually is either not going to happen or be a fluke of luck!
Yep, it looks true, Google Earth shows a For Lease sign out the front of the building.
