Title: old hollow stem lead crystal glasses, victorian or earlier??
Post by: jonchellycain on July 20, 2010, 09:34:18 AM
Hi all
i recently bought a large box of drinking glasses from my local auction and found these in the bottom.

All 3 glasses have a hollow, seven sided faceted shaped stems with a large round foot, with a small pontil mark in the centre. The glow a white with a hint of pale blue under UV which i believe means high lead content
The lower bowl also has 7 facets. Lots of wear to the very outer edge of the base.
Two of the glasses are pretty much identical (give or take a mm) 13cm tall, 7cm rim diameter, 6.5cm foot diameter and 150g.
The third glass, at first i thought may have been cut down, but the pattern finishes lower than the other glasses and its a slightly different shape, also the glass feels and looks slightly different lighter and thinner. 12cm tall, 6.7cm rim diameter, 6cm foot diameter and 105g
I presume they are victorian but early or late, does the shape of the glass have a name, and whats the purpose ie liquer, wine.. ??
many thanks
michelle

What Ho Michelle! I would if they are lead then almost certainly English, as for their use, I think at that height they would be described as a wine glass but they do have a 'deception' style point, maybe used for toasting? They are a bit of an unusual shape, Wolfie

Could you tell us more please? I'm not clear what you mean.

Many thanks, Nigel

just a comment Michelle  -  having trawled a few books, it seems that double baluster stems appear very uncommon - for whatever reason.
