Title: Clear Glass Basket - Unknown - Canadian, Czech, or WHAT??
Post by: antiquerose123 on July 21, 2010, 09:43:07 PM
:hi: I just bought this clear glass basket today.  It is about 7.5 inches tall, and 5.25 inches long, and 3.75 inches wide (I did my measurements twice this time - LOL)

Seems to be well made, and it had a ton of dust/dirt on it before I washed it off.  The base is smooth, and polished with some wear, so I do think this *has* some age to it.  It kinda has some lobed pulls on the side.  When i seen it, the first thing that Popped into my head was possibly Lorraine Glass (Canadian) or even maybe Chrishka too since I think I have saw some lobes like that on some pieces.

So wondering it anyone has any ideas.  The glass does seem to have a (very slight) light green color to it in the heavier places, but nothing with the UV light to glow.

Anyone??  Thanks as always

Dunno who, Rose, but my Mum has the same piece in clear with blue bits. I'd suspected generic Murano or even Chinese but haven't checked it out.

:hi: I forgot to say that it is quite heavy too for the size, and IMHO it appears to be a bit made quite well.  Hard to photograph being clear - that why I put pic #3 in to show the sparkle and to get closer to lobes.

I dunno know - but I feel ?? that this one is not  :or: IMHO, and I thought some of the pulled lobes reminded me off these ones on this ashtray http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,18475.0.html  Which reminds me, I should do a *better* pic for that one too, since that with a camera (puke) phone...

Also I think this clear bowl is also an ashtray, as on each side it has the little dips that could hold a cigarette...a basket ashtray.  I might have to take another pic of it -- But in the meantime, here was *just an extra* pic I took at the time

Hi -- Been rooting around here and I found this....could it be the same?
http://www.rubylane.com/item/61523-1374/Pilgrim-Crystal-Art-Glass-Basket

Quoted from above link, in case it disappears down the road ------- If that is OK?

"The flowing lines of Pilgrim's crystal basket, catalog #206, bring out the liquidity of glass, especially the two sides where the glass was pulled up and curved to make the handle of the basket, showing as well the Italian feel for glass provided by designer Roberto Moretti. The glass was slightly pulled on the other two sides to make small ledges--more for visual balance, I think, and two depressions above them, on the rim of the basket, look as though it might have been intended to be used as an ashtray. But it'd make a great vase for violets or other flowers with short stems. The basket is 8" tall, 4" from the bottom to the interior rim, 4.5" wide, and 4" deep. There is little visible wear on the ground, polished base, but there are 2 dings on the outside of the basket, down close to the outer edge of the base where they wouldn't ordinarily be seen at all, and right next to one of the dings is a pinprick fleabite. In my third photo, one of the dings shows at about noon, three dots. Down and to the left of it, the other ding is covered by a glare spot. (That gives you an idea of its size even though you can't see it.) And there's one small bubble trapped in the glass. This is a very heavy piece of art glass."

Asking Price there:  $40

Then NOW I find this one, using the name - See what a name can do:  http://www.tias.com/6144/PictPage/3923520596.html
Quoted from that link, as always down the road these (links) disappear, so I hope this is OK:

Manufacturer: Pilgrim Glass Roberto Moretti
"Clear glass basket vase, by Roberto Moretti, a top designer for Pilgrim Glass. Characteristic freestyle glass making of his, that is why it looks like it leans to one side. Unsigned, but I have been informed by an advanced collector that it is definitely one of his. 7 1/2 in. high, 3 3/4 in. deep, 5 in. wide. No chips or cracks. Has a few very light scratches which I tried to get in the photos but they are just too light to pick up clearly. The handle has a few very tiny rough spots that I had to mention for accuracy, they are only noticeable if you feel for them. Hand polished pontil. An elegant piece perfect for gift-giving! Free US shipping including delivery confirmation and insurance."
Asking price here:  $250.00 ((??))

IF it is him that made this (I will wait for more experienced people) to say -- but in the meantime, here is an excellent site about him and some examples for your viewing pleasure....

Looks like you have an ID rose...i wasn't sure about the clear glass in this as it doesn't seem murano...hence my 'probaby murano'...well at least it was designed by an Italian... :24:

Rose, yes it's Pilgrim.  I've got one within arms reach. (Oh, I see you found mine :hi:)  I've tried to find a new home for a couple times on ebay and even cribbed a few lines from the text as your first quote. (hmmm, just ignore the eithical gray area :)).   I could never find any concrete evidence that it was a Moretti piece though.  Most comments about his work at Pilgrim had to do with small animal figures.  But it certainly does have a Murano influence.

Ooohhhh this is interesting. Mum's is also clear but the edges have an almost electric-blue line along them. I'm over there again tomorrow, I'll take the camera and get some pics for reference.

Just updating an old thread with new info. These are/were made in China, I recently came across one with a label that reads "Crystal Brand, Made in China".

Wow, thank you very much for updating this thread with the label evidence.  11 years - is that a GMB record?

Interesting in that the quality seems to be quite good, even 11 years ago, with the polished bases.  The design is ok as well with that extra trailed effect and pulls.  (Not a basket fan though but even so).
