Hi, i have just purchased this really good quality bowl. Its 12" across, green with light gold flecks and with a black biscuit type foot. I can see by the label that it is made in Murano, do you have any idea who made it? It is signed on the base * ******* for Lambert 89 but have you any idea what the first bit of the signatures says? i presume that this is the maker or manufacturer? Thx for any help, cheers
-
I'm sure you will find out who VM040 is (I think Anita has the list) but make sure you google Günther Lambert. To me that is a nonmatching sticker.
-
Hi Ivo, thanks for your reply. I had already Googled GL and found they are furniture and home wares distributor. I wasn't aware that the number 044 was the manufactures number (I think it now may be Oball?) cheers for that. I was thinking that this was a bowl made in Murano for the German company, do you think this is incorrect? Is the list of Vetri numbers/makers available?
-
Wow, I haven't seen 040 yet! Actually, Jurgen has a list of Promovetro numbers. Fossilfly has been trying to collectively come up with one, but 040 is not on there as of yet.

As for the GL label; it could be right. I would not be surprised if the piece was made for GL. I have found that a lot of Murano pieces are made for designers and other companies in my 11 years of collecting. Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to Murano glass.

Hi, oops sorry about the 044 in the last message, I was looking up the wrong number, please ignore that, Doh! ;)
-
Sorry I don't have the list of VM numbers. I have the list of VAM (Promovetro) numbers, but they are different. Tami wrote everything I was going to write. Jerry doesn't have the numbers, either, just the names. We'll have to keep working that Fossilfly list.
I've tried forever to decipher the name, but haven't been able to figure it out. It is apparently the name of the glassmaker for the company. I couldn't find a company name that looked anything like the signature. The last part of the name looks like it could be "losin." Maybe that will spur some idea in somebody.
-
Looking at this signature again, yes, it does say _____ _____ for Lambert! I can see it! Just who is blank blank?? Finding out who 040VM will answer our question with no doubt. This is a very nice footed bowl btw. :rah:

I think the first letter may simply be a fancy M. It reminds me of the one Mario Gambaro makes sometimes. Too bad I couldn't turn the last name into Gambaro... but it would have been the wrong VM number for him.
There is always the chance this is someone we've never heard of. It is from '89 -- a time I don't know much about in the history of Murano.
-
I was going to post the same thing last night after my eyes hurt so badly studying this piece, but I had to go to bed. I agree it is an M. It does favor the fancy M, as Anita stated, in the Mario Gambaro signatures. I do not think Mario Gambaro signed this piece either and the vm number doesn't match as she stated. Gosh, this one is driving me insane. We must find out who this is.

I wish I knew who 040 was!?.........................Jerry

Hi Jurgen, I have found out who 040 is. By luck i was at at an antiques fair this morning and spotted a a vase with the Vetri 040 label and was clearly signed. I only had my camera phone but the name read Marcello Farlon 87 (or something very silmilar) and also another name at the bottom which I guess is the company? Hope this is helpful, Wolfie

Hi, found this on Google
"Born in Venice in 1962 to a Murano family, Marcello Furlan owes his passion for blown glass to his father, a master glassmaker. In 1984 after having studied architecture for several years at Venice University, he began work in his family’s glass business. During this period he was responsible for designing and developing new decorative glass features and objects. In 1998 he began a career as designer of lighting fixtures, in parallel with his other career as a freelance graphic artist in advertising."
I reckon this is the fellow!

BINGO!! Great detective work, Whatho! I am excited for you that you found out. This signature drove me crazy. I wonder if there is any relation to Walter Furlan? So glad this one was resolved quickly. Great job!!

What Ho! Glad to be of service, im sure Jurgen is going to be a happy chappie when he reads this ;) Wolfie

Marcello is Walter's son. I've been trying to decipher the other writing to see if we can come up with another name. I didn't see a company for Marcello on Jerry's Fossilfly list. So I wonder if Furlan missed the list or if the 040 company has another name.
-
Ah Ha... That is why I saw such quality in the bowl. Makes sense now that he is Walter's son. What a find!!

I tried to find something on Marcello, but didn't have much luck other than he was born in 1962. Walter Furlan had a son Mario, who became a master from what I read. So I wonder if M Furlan might be Mario or Marcello. After writing that Marcello was Walter's son, I realize that I just assumed this because of the statement of the father being a glass master. There may have been other glass people in the Furlan family. I don't know all the masters. Reading a bit added a lot of uncertainty about what seemed so plain.
-
Thanks for all the help, Wolfie!! Marcello Furlan certainly is the maker of these pieces of glass, but I think we need to find out the name of Walter's company to nail down VM 040. My feeling is that the other name on that piece of glass is maybe a product line or something of that nature. For me its too early to tell. And on a brighter note, I now know TWO Wolfies!! .........................Again, many thanks to everyone, Jerry

To my great surprie I just stumbled on a book called "Die Welt des Günther Lambert" - basically a product catalogue from 1990 witl lots of lloyd loomish chairs, ashleyesque cushions, printed chintz covers and bistro style garden sets, accompanied by hilariously bad copywriting. The section glass is full of almosts: almost nice decanters, almost functional drinking glasses, almost the real thing. "The best, the finest, the most expensive comes from Murano. Objects which Marcello Furlan makes for us". and "We have learned much from Marcello. And he from us. It is a pleasure to work with him. And an extravagance which we afford. In every respect. And in the end, also in the price."
According to the price list, a green footed bowl with graded gold will set you back DM 495 (30 cm) - divide by 2 to get euros. And remember, this was 20 years ago.

I learned since the time of this post that the old VM numbers and the newer Promovetro VAM numbers are not the same. The bowl is probably not Colleoni. It doesn't look like anything that is made there.
I bet you're surprised to see your bowl again. :fr:

Actually only sold it a couple of weeks back....been on ebay and a half a dozen antiques fairs, sat on the other halfs mothers table for a year or two, eventually got rid of the damn thing and now it comes back to haunt me!!!
Pleased it's found an appreciative home and audience at last.

sat on the other halfs mothers table for a year or two, eventually got rid of the damn thing and now it comes back to haunt me!!!
Well that damn thing as you put it is a high quality piece of Murano glass which now has a makers name and likely rare and valuable ;D ;D
-
Seriously it is a really nice piece and I was surprised it wasn't snapped up 1st time out. As the old saying goes "something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it" we just kept discounting until it found that someone willing to pay something. I hope it treats you more kindly.
Funny thing is we've had a signed Marcello Furlan piece before complete with VM label (photos on old computer) so "you live and learn" is clearly nonsense!
*going to bump the other two dozen other unidentified threads I've started over the years*
*then check if I've still got the pieces*
*then kick myself*
