Title: ugly glass (small olive jar?)
Post by: cubby01 on August 08, 2010, 05:59:40 PM
From a misc boxed lot of jars and bottles at a collectors estate auction.  Couple goodies in the box but I have no clue what this is.  It seems there is not enough wear on the base to be old, but it is sure trying to look that way.  Lots of junk and ash in the glass.  The bubbles are crude and close to the surface.  In one spot I can just about feel a bubble flex.

I'm inclined to think it's import decorator store junk but need better informed opinions before I toss it into the donation box.   Thanks, -Buck

I suspect this is copying Walsh Pompeian - and Bernard is your expert for that area of glass, if it is the real thing :).    But I suspect this is a copy made beyond the confines of Europe in quite recent times.    I has a similarity to the 1960's Dutch 'Antiqua' and 'Etruska' series  - both of which included the colour green I believe.    With these pieces I believe that fairly large areas show evidence of 'elongated' bubbles.     I am unaware of your area of the U.K.  -  but might we ask if you are in the vicinity of the location of a once famous Roman habitation :)
P.S. just realized not sure even if you are in the U.K.

LOL, There's an Italian family that lives down the street, does that count  ;D  I'm smack dab in the middle of the US - I just fixed the location in my profile.

I wasn't sure what to call it - the container shape - but it appeared to have the shape of a 'jar for stuffing olives into'.  I would have to ask my wife if it's olive green or not  ;).

Oh, and I have not seen a picture of Etruska glass that was this ugly.  Whoever made it tried hard for the naive look.

Looking good. Definitely no relation (design, quality, colour) to anything Dutch - but there is no reason to treat it with disrespect.  Could be older Mallorca, Murano or Altare. Nice find.

I have seen that form before. It was made to look old and crude but in reality its not.
Glass of its nature show up at the import stores to be used as a decorative piece.
My feeling is it was made south of the US boarder.

So how does that jibe with Ivo's suggestion of Mallorca, Murano or Altare?

It is not Murano.  I looked for Mallorca and Altare glass online and didn't see anthing that looked similar.   So South of the US boarder is as good a suggestion as any for a next round of searches.   My earlier searches were not exhaustive by any means so those locations are still possible.

Thanks for all the input folks.  I see the few post related to my profile settings have been removed.  Sorry for any distraction caused by the off topic.

This is what I am talking about. I'd be interested to hear Ivo's opinion.

Mexican is certainly a possibility, with them churning out all that rough recycled stuff everyone knows so well, but Ivo knows his stuff.

I had wondered if it might be more contemporary Turkish, it has some features in common, but the shape is unusual for that source - and for south america.
I reckon I'm in Ivo's camp over this one - but i know nothing of the companies he mentions.
