Title: Chance-lookalike diamond trays - one labelled GU Decorglas Made in Germany
Post by: Anne on August 13, 2010, 06:47:51 PM
A while ago I found a set of trays which look like Chance but aren't. There were 2 diamond shaped ones and 6 small square ones (see 1st pic). Sizes: gilt diamonds = 250x150mm, gilt squares = 80x80mm. Compared to the known Chance diamond trays the shape is different, deeper with more in-curved sides, and more pointed ends. The decoration is bright shiny gold. No indication on any of them as to maker.

2 weeks ago I found another diamond tray (see 2nd pic): same size and shape, same gold, different pattern from the above set (see 3rd pic). This one has a label: GU Decorglas (see 4th pic).

So, I'm pretty confident that the 8-piece set is also GU Decorglas, whoever they may be.

We have one older topic about a GU Decorglas plate here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,35310.0.html which has a similar style to some others I picked up a couple of years ago, but we have no further information about them.

Anyone know any more about them please?

Thanks for prodding me - I missed this first time around.

I'm pretty sure the logo is actually SU where the S and U are stylistically intertwined. If so, then it's Spiegelunion Flabeg raising it's head again, as I don't know of another W. German company producing these type of trays.

Thanks David.

I just found an English page on the history of Spiegelunion Flabeg which you may know of, but if not it makes interesting reading:

I did a lot of searching for Spiegelunion before but hadn't seen that page so I imagine it's surfaced since 2007: so thanks for that. So it would appear that the original company making domestic glassware, a la Chance, could be Unionglas which then became SU.

I have e-mailed Flabeg GmbH to see if it can expand anymore on the company's output. I remember seeing some catalogues it produced and they were very extensive!
