Title: Thick glass "pillow" or bid vase with polished edges and "nailhead" sides
Post by: dorian_graye on August 16, 2010, 08:14:46 PM
Can anyone help identify this vase?  It looks Scandinavian, but I don't know.  It could be German or something.  The base and rims are highly polished.  The interior space graduates downward to a more narrow reservoir.  the sides are highly textured and the front and back are obviously crystal clear.  It sits 5.75" inches tall, 3" inches wide, and 1.75" inches thick.  Any suggestions would be beneficial.  Thank you!

I was thinking, perhaps Skruf or Orrefors?

I suppose it doesn't have JG engraved on the base, does it?

No, nothing on the base.  What would "JG" signify?  Thanks.

In german (and austrian) handwriting the ´I´ is shaped similar to the ´J´; therefore the Ingridglas signature ´IG .....´ can easily
be misread as ´JG´.  ;)

JG = Johansfors Glasbruk

For what it's worth, to me it feels more Scandinavian than German. At this point nothing more than a gut feeling, mostly because of how thick the glass is. I haven't seen it that thick in that sort of shape in German glass yet (but I can hardly claim to have seen all German glass, and some factories were following Scandinavian fashion, so Germany cannot be excluded entirely).

On a side note, I'm curious about Orrefors.  Does Orrefors always sign their pieces to the base?  If not, were they signed only during a certain period?  Do some of their pieces only carry the sticker?

I did mean JG, actually referring to IG for Ingridglas.  It's just easier to ask if it has JG engraved on the bottom and explain later.   ;)  :)
