Title: Uranium cup and saucer for ID
Post by: Paul S. on August 18, 2010, 07:23:55 PM
If I had a Shekel for every time I'd said I was never going to buy any more U. glass, wouldn't I be rich.  Being Mr. thicky I actually thought this was a cup and saucer, but almost certainly not, and I've gone for the night light holder really because I cant think of anything else  -  both the 'cup and saucer' do have a water stain line which may just be visible in the last pic., so I guess both pieces have held water for a sustained period of time.   Have looked through Bagley or Sowerby catalogues, and not theirs I'm fairly sure - and I don't see it on Pamela's site.  Diameter of cup is 115mm and of the saucer is 152mm - with overall height at about 52mm.   What bugs me is that it fluoresces with a good old 1930/40 look, but has zero wear.   Saucer has that flat ground outer rim to the base, and the 'spiralling base pattern I hope will be recognized by someone.  Would like to have confirmation of real use (assuming I am wrong), and a date if possible please.   thanks for looking. :)

swirl in the base reminds me of Brockwitz SIEGFRIED

Not sure why you think it's not a cup and saucer    If it's not for a beverage, then it's for custard or dessert. I don't have time to look in my depression glass books (I'm being summoned to watch TV), but I will. I would go for 1930s/40s.

Looks like Pamela has cracked it.

sincere thanks to both of you.  Just felt that the 'cup' was a little too shallow and wide to be a real cup, not remotely like a usual cup and saucer.    However, I can very easily go with the custard cup or desert plus bowl direction, which fits in with Pamela's links to the Brockwitz patterns  -  I'm still looking at them, but feel Pamela is correct, although re the water staining rings around the sides  -  can only think someone has used these pieces for other purposes maybe.   I was amazed at how immaculate the bases were for quite old pieces of glass.       Again, my thanks to both of you. :)   Think I will keep them.
