greetings from austria !
i do collect claret jugs with patience and passion and my small collection ( non comercial ) can be seen at www.karaffensammler.at !
i am looking for : A Collection of Patterns for the Use of Glass Decorators - by joseph keller - a copy would be fantastic or only parts from ist would be great !
mostly i am interested in finely engraved glass from 1850 - 1890 made in stourbridge - carder fritsche, webb etc etc ..
and i would like to get in touch with other collectors !

Thomas — I've just spent four hours drooling over your amazing collection! Grateful thanks for the English text. On viewing the source html to see who had designed and built your website (no luck there), I noticed an interesting and useful overview of the history of claret jugs, but I haven't found out how to access this from your home page.
I've only had three or four examples of Rock Crystal through my hands, all simple wineglasses, but I found them equally stunning. My main interest from a practical dealer viewpoint is in later engravers, like Mr Douglas of Walsh and Jack Lloyd of Tudor.
I was particularly intrigued by your David & Maurice Davis Birmingham 1901 claret jug, with engraving by Frederic F. Carder for Stevens & Williams. Recently I've been taking a close look at S&W's ribbed glass, and had dated it myself to approximately 1909–mid 1920s. Your example was engraved on a blank which was described by S&W as Cut Notched and Split Rib, and was still being made in the 1920s. Their 1920s pattern 45666 jug was made in sizes from ½ pint up to 4 pints (about 2¼ litres). S&W's Grotesque pattern is similar with four heavyweight ribs. It hadn't occurred to me before that blanks in these patterns provide irresistible neatly framed panels for the engraver. Your claret jug takes me back a further nine years, matching Mervyn Gulliver's cited date of c.1900 (p.218). Thanks.
And finally — have you considered how these ribbed blanks were made? I think that there is a strong likelihood that they were pressed, being transferred immediately while still hot to the master glassmaker for further work.

i like that kind of discussion - it really makes sense !
first of all - my english is quite ok - but i do not know all special terms to express myself !
to the Davies / carder Jug - i think you could be right - but i think the hot glass was blown into a form - then you have these 4 rims( ribs ) along the glass body and then they have been cutted ! i do not think that it is pressed glass !
but i think we mean nearly the same !
The very interesting for me is that the mounting and the handle as well do have the same pattern engraved to the glass.
what do you mean with access to my website - please try to explain in more easier words for me :-)
last but not least : what means ..." matching Mervyn Gulliver's cited date of c.1900 (p.218)." - who is mervyn gulliver !
by the way i am a dealer as well but i came from silver - and went to claret jugs - espesially english silver mounted and cut glass claret jugs because

BECAUSE ENGLISH CLARET JUGS ARE THE VERY BEST IN THIS WORLD - AND THERE WERE NO SUCH GIFTED ENGRAVERS AND THERE WILL NEVER AGAIN SUCH GENIUS !!
the problem is also - literature is hard to get - but i am in mail contact with Charles Hajdamach und Jane Shadel Spillman - BECAUSE THERE COMES THE TIME WHERE YOU DO NOT KNOW WHO TO ASK - therefore i am very happy with this wonderful forum !!

Thank you very much for sharing your web site with all the beautiful Claret Jugs
you have photographed from your collection. They are spectacular examples.
The engraving on some are absolute pieces of quality art.
I have within the last year decided to start collecting engraved stemmed
glasses similar to the one you have posted. I have been looking in the
antique shops in my home area but have been unsuccessful in finding
engraved glass of any quality. The challenge while hunting for quality pieces
adds to the enjoyment. Thank you again for you sharing your inspirational and
intriguing collection.
