Title: Large Victorian dump weight (door stop)
Post by: Alfies Dad on August 28, 2010, 07:36:25 PM
Hi, I bought a victorian dump weight from the charity shop today, labelled doorstop with a price 1 pound.

It is quite a size 8 inches high weighing a whopping 3.5 kilo's in the usual green colour with bubbles inside

Unfortunatly like the sticker said it has been used as a doorstop and suffered over the year's resulting with a few bruises and quite alot of scratches.

Could this be repaired and would it be cost effective to have it done if its possible?

Will add photo's if Required, Thanks Robert.

Hi.

You can repair / repolish dumps, but they are very hard glass, and bruises go in deep - and they cause a lot of wear to the equipment, so repair is (relatively) expensive. As for cost effective .... it might cost £30 - £50 for repair: and a typical dump might make £60 - £80 when sold. So it is a fine judgement. I use a couple of damaged ones for....door stops! They work very well.

Thanks Alan,

I will keep it as it is for now and use as a doorstop, but with the amount i paid for it maybe one day get it done.

If i could find someone to do it for the cost of 30 pounds its still a bargain,

Robert.
