Title: unusual sarpaneva set iittala
Post by: glassyeyes on September 15, 2010, 06:18:39 PM
Hi.
Recently purchased this three piece sarpaneva set.
Only the orb is signed sarpaneva and dated 1956.
The hand blown bowl and plate are not signed.
Was this perhaps a set from day one and not all signed due to this?
Has anyone seen one of these "sets"?

I have seen individual pieces but the fact that the two pieces are not saigned is unusual.
Any ideas or help?
The plate shown is the same as on the iittala karhuls catalogue of 1955 but does not show the orb.. Anyone have that catalogue?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Welcome to the board, not sure I can be of much help.

I do not think your original three items were sold as a set. The plate and bowl being unsigned is not unusual, tableware is not often signed. Is your 'orb' similar to this one? http://picasaweb.google.com/Johnmj100/ScandinavianGlass#5433585423581512210

thanks for the response.
the orb is the two tone thick version, not the sunball.

There is a two-toned ball in the Sarpaneva Kokoelma Collection book described this way (it is clear on the bottom and blue on the top, with a small hole at the top):

Art Object Iso tantrapallo (large tantric ball)
1957
Glass, turned mold blown
D 135
Signed Timo Sarpanva
32926

The bowl and plate are a little bit difficult to distinguish, but the blow could be:
Bow, li-301; 2301
1956
glassi-colors
turned mold blown, flared base cut
D 175, 275
signed Timo Sarpaneva
Iittala-57 (green) i-301 (blue)

The plate could be:
Plate Ikava (Yearning)
1956
glass, i-colors
turned-mold blown
D 350
32635

There are other plates and bowls but if these are the correct ones, they would all be from the same vintage and might certainly have been purchased together.

Great pieces. Good luck with them.

Thanks Rob.
You are exactly correct.
Upon closer examination, the bowl is signed on the rim and bears the number 2301 but no date.
The plate also has markings on the rim and is dated 57 as is the tantric bowl.
I have had a lot of Sarpaneva but never noticed pieces signed on the rim.
Thanks again.

I'm glad the pieces I listed were the ones you have.  They are early and quite nice, you are lucky to have them.

The early Sarpaneva pieces always have a lot more hand work in them than the later pieces.  Are you a dealer or do you collect Sarpaneva?

Best
