Post by: chopin-liszt on September 16, 2010, 11:43:58 AM: It's not Monart, I don't think. It could be Vasart, or perhaps Strathearn - I imagine putting the extra blob of glass on the base to incorporate the leaping salmon logo might have been problematic in a thin based bowl like this.
I'd veer towards Strathearn, (although my gut instinct is to veer as far away as possible from anyhing this pink)

The "harlequin" effect (the broken canes) look a bit more complex on your bowl than the ebay link, and you don't have the two-tone effect of pinks - I don't know if the ebay one is Vasart, Strathearn or made by one of the original workers later. I'd still think Strathearn is most likely for your bowl.
I've certainly seen more Strathearn big bowls than Vasart ones, but to be sure, you need one of the experts in this field.

Could a kind mod shift this thread to British and Irish glass?

It was sold to me as Monart but quite cheaply so I'm not too upset.

One other thing I would say about this piece that's not so obvious in the picture is that it's not particularly symmetrical. The base is at an angle, so that it is a little bit slanted when in placement - perhaps this lack of attention to detail places it more obviously in one camp or the other?

Post by: chopin-liszt on September 17, 2010, 01:42:49 PM: Vasart tends to be more wonky than Strathearn, I think it's that moulds were used at Strathearn, while Vasart is free-blown, I'm more than happy to be corrected by somebody more experienced and full of the right info than me.

However, anything can go wonky in the annealing ovens.
My guts still say Strathearn.

Thanks, Frank. My admiration for Strathearn has just increased, and I've mostly always liked it a lot. (unless it's pink or pastel :-X )
I think it's highly under-rated.

I received photos of a large collection and these will appear on SG sometime after the conference... along with literally thousands of other images that have accumulated in the backlog since my move to France caused a life inversion.
