I am assuming this is English although I am not particularly good on cut crystal. It's 10.5", very heavy and am I correct in thinking it's actually a claret jug because of the large lip? Any idea of age too please?
-
hi ! nice cut decanter - i would date it around 1855/60
-
The difference between a decanter and a claret jug is a claret jug has a handle, I believe.
-
sounds good - i haven`t a single claret jug without a handle !! :fr:

A question about design considerations ...
... Why have both a handle and neck rings? For a decanter, the neck rings would have provided good support in use. But for a jug with a handle?? Was it just fashionable in days past or were jugs intended to be lifted by both the handle and the neck?
-
I'd have thought the rings were simply a decorative feature, commensurate with fashion in a handled piece.
But perhaps both were needed after over-consumption of the contents?
I have a strong personal preference for handled decanters (claret jugs). I think they are so much more elegant with, rather than without, handles.
-
i agree ! much more elegant with a matching handle !! :or:
-
thank you. Do you think it is English?
-
for my opinion it is english - the bohemiam jugs look slightly different :sm:
