Title: Davidson No 7 black glass stand
Post by: Tony H on December 18, 2005, 10:01:26 AM
Hi Guys
I have added photos of some of my " Chippendale" to my photo album George Davidson.

Can anyone tell me what a Davidson No 7 black glass stand is like?. I have some stands but no No 7.

Tony — Like you, I've never seen a No. 7 plinth, which had a 4½" fitting diameter.   I don't believe the 1936 price list which shows it as available in cloud glass, as there is no obvious Davidson product for it to fit, but, of course, then they didn't know that.   In black or conventional colour, the most likely explanation is that it was made to order for another glassworks, wholesaler, or retailer, like the flower blocks supplied to Walsh and Liberty.   Once they had the mould then it was kept on the price list should A.N. Other wish to order it.   Numbers made could have been very small indeed.

I wonder what happened to the missing No. 6?

Thank you for your reply.

I had forgot about this posting, the reason I asked is in a Davidson cat (I have a photocopy from Chris ) on page 18 Flower Sets 129C or129F-comprising: Bowl 129C 9" F 12", 41/2 Dome Block 3H and Black Plinth No 7

In my Davidson collection I have a 129C and Dome Block in matted Emerald but no Plinth.

Hi, Bernard, Tony,

The No 7 plinth seems to have ceased production in about 1936. A 1953 catalogue lists the 129C as being sold with a No 5 plinth. The No 7 plinth was only made in black. I guess as the No 5 plinth fitted the 129C bowl, then there was no need for the No 7.

Regards

Chris

Tony & Chris — I'd forgotten about the Chippendale sets.   I've had two through my hands, both with No. 5 plinths.   I'd assumed that it was careless picking by Davidson's despatchers, just choosing any plinth that fitted.  Both sets were frosted green like yours, Tony, with black plinths.

My best ever Chippendale set was a 1210Y with its Premier flower support.

Many thanks for your comments, I will just have to keep looking, here in NZ even a No5 is hard to find.
