Keith — That's the Sowerby 2487 "Star" flower holder and it was supplied with the vase, No. 2525, by the way.   So no need to worry.

Keith — Sowerby made life easy for us in that if it came with a 2487 Star flower holder, it's a vase — if it came with a 2444 flower block, it's a bowl.   If it came with anything else you have to check.   So as the two flared shapes of 2525 (same mould) came with blocks, they're bowls.

2525 is also useful as Sowerby pattern numbers are sequential, so, as it is a registered design, it gives us a date in the sequence, helping date other pattern numbers.   The one known disparity, a design apparently registered considerably later than the pattern number suggested, turned out to be a rare error in Simon Cottle's book on Sowerby.   You will not be surprised to learn that the error was discovered here on the GMB.

Thanks again Bernard,it's pleasing to have information about a piece of glass especially when you've many that are total 'unknowns' and I have lots, cheers.
