Title: Chinese Or A Bit More Interesting?
Post by: Hourglass on September 30, 2010, 01:06:45 PM
Just received this interesting dome weight. 3" across by 2"1/2 high with a gold scene on a 'floating' cobalt 'cushion'. This weight has a smooth flat base. Is it one of these Chinese jobbies or is there some age to it?

Base and profile shots are always required.

Base and profile pictures as requested. I'll remember this in future.

It is a Murano paperweight - I believe it is one of the birthsign series. They did these in various styles the most common being with two rings of canes surrounding the central gold leaf figure. A nince weight

Thanks for the ID on this one Dave, I will have to keep an eye out for the other 11 now! If they are all like this one then they will be worth seeking out. So which of the birth signs would this one be then?

I think it is probably Virgo.  These birthsign weights appear quite regularly in Ebay, although not always in the same style as yours and I have seen them in three different sizes too. Try going into Ebay and typing Paperweight Murano in the search box this will bring up all Murano weights for sale to save you scrolling though every pagge.

Yes Dave, I've had a scroll through and those similar are in the main of the cane surround type although others do come up in 'paperweight' if you type in 'zodiac', 'birth sign' and 'star sign' as well, some that are listed the sellers don't always attribute these to Murano and do not appear when you type it in.
