I wonder if anyone recognises this little bottle? My first thought was Isle of Wight but the shape of the remains of the label make me doubt it. The auction room had unhelpfully put their lot number over the maker's sticker and it partially came off leaving only the traces of gold and black. The base is blank apart from an outline of the sticker. It stands a little over 3" high (8.5 cm)

Okra glass maybe, have a piece with similar decoration.
-
I somehow thought that all Okra would be etched with their name and maybe more on the base.
-
I wonder if that is the correct stopper? Its finish is matte whereas the bottle itself has a shiny appearance for the "black" parts.

Hi,
Black and Gold printing rules out Okra as they only used oblong labels white background and black printing. Its not unusual to have a different finish on the stopper as these are always made at a different time to the bottle.
Can we see a picture of the base?

Pretty thing, isn't it.
I have no idea -- and still trying to figure out I-Rice. It does not have the same shape label as what the I-Rice perfume bottle I have. Just search I-Rice if you want to see some of those (merely as a suggestion) bottles... ;)
I am clueless on your pretty perfume Bottle, but very nice !!!!

Photo of the base as requested - it's polished flat. I've remembered that early Mdina used a black and gold rectangular label.......but this doesn't feel like a Mdina piece.
I'm guessing that I-rice is the International Perfume Bottle Association? I'd never heard of them before but I'll potter about in their website and see what I can find.
-
As far as I know Mdina have never used a black and gold label. White paper or clear plastic labels with a black design and lettering are often seen but not black and gold.

Hi Iain.
That pic of the base certainly rules out Okra.
Happy hunting.

I've just dug out my copy of Mark Hill's Mdina book and it shows the rectangular black and white label with gold around the edges. But my label has more expanse of gold and is more round edged so I think that probably rules that idea out.
-
Irice is an North American importer that sourced a lot of its older products from Japan, amongst other places.
-
The "mirror-like" finish on the bottle rules out Mdina or Isle of Wight Studio Glass.
It is quite distinctive, and should help to narrow down a maker. It's not John Ditchfiled either, label wrong shape - his are round and gold. Can't help more than that i'm afraid.

Where?
-
Sorry, I should have specified where. It's on page 133 (Michael Harris:Mdina Glass & Isle of Wight Studio Glass by Mark Hill).

Iain, I see two labels neither have any gold on them. The top label is stained a little yellow around the edges but it is not gold and never was. Let's not start yet another internet myth, there is already enough misinformation in circulation repeated ad infinitum.
