Title: Vase signed AY or AG or A?
Post by: cubby01 on October 06, 2010, 11:10:22 PM
From a distance I thought it was Oriental but in my hands I thought not.  Maybe I overpaid but I couldn't pass it up at $7US.   It's just under 9" (23cm) tall.  Flat polished based.  Looks like it's signed AY but I guess it could be AG or AJ.

Thanks in advance for any help identifying the maker or country of origin.

(the foreshortening of the close-up lens in the first picture makes the top look wider than it is relative to the base.)

Hi Cubby - I think I have a *relative* of yours here....that I JUST posted earlier today.  Not sure --- but they look like the same idea.  Mine has 2 labels on it, and signed on the bottom too.

Take a look and see, as here is Only one pic, but flip over to the link Above and see the other pics of mine (compared to yours)......I paid $7.99 CAD for mine.

They look (the idea) the same...  ;)

............. :24: :24: and both of US on the same Day.... :24:

Good to hear from you Rose.  Wow what a coincidence.  I'm sure they are siblings.  I guess they flooded the North American market with 'em eh?  ;D

Thanks for pointing to the other link, very helpful.  -Buck

Hmmm, Rose, I've seen that F&C Crystal label somewhere in another forum or thread.  I'm thinking maybe Poland.

Lol.....at least I Think they are the same....but that still is a guess....but they do look related (lol).

I guess you thought it was worthy too, just like I did so at least I know my Eyes are not going yet  8) as you saw something in it too.  If you find any other info let me know too.

I guess that was $14 bucks we could have kept between the two of us.  Some people are going to think we were Shopping together.  Funny, how we both posted such similar vases on the same day...

While you were typing I was moding my last post "Hmmm, Rose, I've seen that F&C Crystal label somewhere in another forum or thread.  I'm thinking maybe Poland."

From what I saw of yours with the elongated bubbles (4 right?) and the white whateveryoucallit at the bottom, I have no doubt they came from the same glass house.

Buck, your vase is Adam Jabłoński (AJ), made in Poland.

Take a look here:  http://www.hutajablonski.pl/  -- click on 'wazony' and go to page 3...  you'll see a very similar one.

All the best.  :)

Thank you Anik.  So I was on track with Poland. I'm happy about that.   Is Adam Jabłoński a good (respected) maker?

Hi Buck... that's a tough question.  :-\

According to his own website, and some coverage he has had in the press, Adam Jabłoński could be considered a respected glass artist.  But in all honesty, I think his earlier pieces have much more merit than what he and his son are producing today.  He's gone for mass production, and his name (or initials) is signed on EVERYTHING that comes out of the glassworks, whether well-made or not.  :spls: (By the way, some time ago, Jabłoński's website stated that HE personally signs all the glass.  Now, the website states that each piece is signed Jabłoński or AJ... )

His pieces do sell for high prices though... especially here in Poland.  (Jabłoński glass is much cheaper in Canada and the US...  I don't understand it.)

If you like it, I think it's a great find for what you paid.   :)

He is not highly valued in Holland - we were the main target of his exports for the past 20 years and as a result every flea market stall has a piece of Jablonski. I could start a collection on a budget - but I won't.

 :24:

I was trying to put it 'gently'...

By the way, here in Poland, tourists are the main buyers of Jabłoński glass due to the 'high' prices... This I know straight from the mouth of the owner of Kraków's main Polish glass shop.

Great replies, thanks!  To be honest this one is prettier than the sample photos I saw currently for sale but still I don't think I will start a collection either.  Space for vases is rather limited.

i wonder what you call that stuff near the bottom of the vase -- as I am trying to google words, and I do not know what (or how to explain) the description of it.....any ideas.

I do think they are pretty too.....yours, and my (no-name one yet) too.

 ;)

Rose, I think after looking at your vase again, the signature is a quick and sloppy AJ 2004.  I think your vase is their # JW023 Adam Jablonski Art Glass Vase in mauve or brown or whatever color yours is (I'm a bit color deficient)... online stores describe it as:

Art Glass Vase- approx 10" tall w/ wavy top;  Rose (or whatever color) with frosted base with purple (or whatever color) ribbon.
24% lead crystal
Signed by artist

I still don't think we should assume Rose's vase is Jabłoński, despite the strong similarities.  The engraving is completely wrong.  I cannot see an A or a J, plus Jabłoński Glassworks would not put a date on such a 'common' piece.
