I visited Broadfield House Glass Museum on Thursday, while I was there I discovered what this little 'vase' was designed for. A couple of examples have been on the message board before (I have since discovered) so no doubt this won't keep people guessing for long.
This example is made with Uranium glass and stands 8cm (a little over three inches) tall, the rim is about 2.5cm (one inch) in diameter. The rim is ground and polished and there is some waterstaining on the inside. Faint vertical optic ribbing is also apparent but hard to see in my photos.
Sorry, no prizes for correct answers. :'(

I think I know what it is as I've just bought one (with Patricia's help) at the Cambridge Glass Fair. Nice in uranium though, mine's just plain glass. I'll keep schtum. :D

I know full well but will not tell :nogos:

I know too :-X

Nice. Last one I tried to buy on ebay I was overbid on - and it wasn't even described properly. One day I'll find one. Can I ask how much you paid?
-
Do you mean me Julie? I think I paid £10...it's Dartington.
-
vase for a snowdrop? ;D
-
Too small for a bulb I suspect... so an acorn vase perhaps?
-
It is an acorn vase Anne. :hiclp: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,9298.0.html
I don't think this was a hard enough puzzle, especially when the first three responses (four really) were "I know what it is". ;D I will have to try harder!

Looked at the old thread and know now (not then) that Wuidart and Co Ltd advertised them in 1956.
So not as old as suspected.

P.S. Max, I heard you already are getting results?

I was lucky enough to find an acorn with a 1cm sprout in the garden. :hiclp: But....erm...I've just realised that I've had it upside down in the acorn sprouter...ooops! I thought the sprout was a root! Oh deary me. I hope it survives, it's gone a bit slimy though! Poor Arnold Acorn!
-
Max, the sprout IS the root.....

According to this pic the acorn will figure it out whichever way you put it in the vase ;)

You're not the only one Max! :-[
Still, it softened it up nicely!
-
:24: Ok...I'll turn up the other way again. I'll let you know how it progresses!
-
If the root is already showing that's very encouraging, I think.

I have to have a go! I've gotten crocus and tulip bulbs to root in water for the first time this year so an acorn is the next challenge.
