?!?!?!?

I don't know anything about the stamp mark, but (if it was my sort of thing) I would be seriously questioning the condition - "great condition" could cover a multitude of sins, and there seem to be black marks in/on the body and other strange things inside the rim.
For that sort of money, (over 6 month's income for me :thud: ) I think I'd want it to be in perfect condition.
-
i feel concerned about this as well - and the quality seems to be not the very best - i miss the vibrant feeling :or:
-
I checked the prices on other things offered, because the price on this vase seemed very high for what it was. :spls:
-
Of course it is high. The seller is in New York City.... it must be the smog.... seems to be a pattern for NY, NY sellers.... ;D
-
The mark, although not too clear does look like the S&W 'stamp' but then so does the fake one in 'British Glass 1800-1914' by Hajdamach,I agree with Sue it's looks a little dodgy and if some thing 'niffs' it's probably best to leave it alone :wsh:
-
I played with the picture some and found there is writing on the bottom of the vase. The numbers 27/65 are there. There is also some scratching that doesn't look like shelf wear to me. Curious vase. The rim and finish reminds me of some of the Bohemian glass vases.
-
i see what you mean - there is no flair - the colours are peculiar - the rim and foot is odd ! the trouble is - i only have handled 2 or 3 cameo pieces in my life so its hard to say and the pics are not the best as well ... ! last but not least - the shape doesn´t look very english to me ! :ra:

One would think that for that kind of money pics would be great, unless of course there is a reason for them to not be. I am always leery of sellers that have tens of thousands of dollars worth of goods listed, and are a bad amateur photographer at best...... with a bad camera....
And I agree on the shape.... does not seem quite right....
And why does the Macro work well when shooting the side cameo detail, but does not work well for the mark????? Hmmmmmmmm.......Curious

very well observed :hiclp:
BUT if there would be a signed stevens & williams cameo vase -authentic and original that size .. i wouldn`t hesitate ...
to offer the seller a 1500 $ :sm:
because - i think they are still much sought-after :-))

If its fake, you could do return it. Just a idea.
Returns:
3 day money back, buyer pays return shipping

Given the poor photos it could actually be a gorgeous vase in real life and once cleaned up. I'd certainly want to see it in person before even thinking much further on it.
I wonder if they put the the pencil or whatever marks on the bottom trying to make the stamp more visible. Surely they would clean off quite easily otherwise. I can't see any other reason why they are there. The written numbers don't make a lot of sense unless they were some kind of auction lot or inventory numbers.
-
The sellers have accidentally added a zero or two to all their listings... >:D
Seems to me to be a new ebay seller, more used to a bricks & mortar shop in NY where you can get away with such prices.
-
They have been on ebay since 2002...... 9 years, 63 feedbacks... 21 as a seller and 42 as a buyer..... they just have low sales, likely a reflection of value vs asking price...... or as Cathy so nicely put it, the accidental addition of a zero to each of their prices..... :24: I think more delusional, I mean wishful thinking.....

Thomas if unsure save your money for the fabulous claret jug that will come up in the next few weeks . Well maybe :X:
-
8) well Thomas- my mum used to say- "If in doubt, do without" For me the vase is only O.K. and I agree that the colour, shape and sparseness of the overall design does not,IMHO, scream to me Stevens and Williams. Mind you all I have seen has been in countless museums and some private collections and the pretty pictures in British Glass 1800-1914 C Hajdamach. regards Carol

i think i will hold my powder dry - need some money for the national glass fair on 14th of november :rah:

And if you want the very, very best Cameo work of all time, what you want is a contemporary piece by Helen Millard.
She's better than any of the old "classics". Honest!
Or have a look at Jonathan Harris, or Tim Harris, for silver and gold cameo carved work.

And dont forget Terri L Colledge who is fantastic, second to none.

But it's painted enamels, not Cameo work, Mike.

Back to the vase in question. I don't know whether it's a fake or not, but I spent a fair bit of time yesterday looking at Grover's English Cameo Glass. To me my studies say the rim looks OK, the colours look OK, some of S&W stuff seemed a little less well-defined than the Webb and there is a similar Webb (marked) vase (shape, design and colours, but 3 inches smaller).
I think the scratchy looking marks may be pencil marks trying to make the mark stand out more. These hot-stamped marks are quite hard to read never mind photograph ( I have a marked Webb Burmese).
It looks like uranium glass to me; that might be the clincher.
-
grover´s is my holy bible but i have to say the quality shown in the book is much better ... :or: and there is still the unusual shape ..except page20 c 5 signed webb with geranium...

Recieved, Mike - thanks. Excellent work,
(but not my taste, I'm afraid - I'm really not fond of flowers).
I did a google search, on the name - the only thing which came up with images was the owl on Mike's site!
I jumped to a stupid conclusion without sufficient evidence. :-[

Hows about a nice Dragon
Regards Mike
-
All very nice but George Woodall is the master of all time in regards to cameo work IMVHO ;D
-

-
nice dragon - how old might this nice little baby be ?
-
how about putting our hands together for the guy that knocked up the first Portland vase - and when you consider how long ago he created the piece, how special he must have been - it remained the finest piece of cold worked glass for what, perhaps 1700 years?? So, all together - hip, hip hooray/for the best Roman of his day :hiclp:

Terri made this in 2009.

I thought the company was Steven's' and Williams, therefore I'd suggest if you were going to ask that much for a vase you might get the name right in your listing and precis?
