I do find this a little intriguing.

Now there is another listing using the same image http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ANTIQUE-BOHEMIAN-CUT-GLASS-HYACINTH-VASE-YELLOW-WHITE-/370447077714?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item56405dd152
but mentioning a slight imperfection.
I asked the seller and they said they did indeed have a pair. Strange they didn't mention it in the listing?

There are two scenarios. 1. They had two vases. I certainly don't mention if I have two of something that is going to make me a profit. Say you have two and you might get fewer bids on each and therefore less profit. Why retake the photo if there is no significant difference between the two?
2. There is only one vase and it was returned by the buyer because of a undisclosed imperfection.

As a general question ... if you have a "true pair" (i.e. with mirror image decoration) would you still split them? Or does the "2x + a bit" rule of thumb then come into play for maximising profit?

No I wouldn't and haven't split a true pair.

I would and have to give two people a chance to own something that was one of a two-off. It would be different if they were a complementing pair instead of just a matching pair.

I think what you're calling a complementing pair Frank is what Kev and I are calling a true pair.
