Sorry bubbadog, I've removed the photo as it wasn't yours.  Taking photos from other sites/people leaves the GMB open to copyright problems.    Do have a look at this link and upload your own photo soon, we look forward to seeing it.   :hi: :)

Is this the piece: Nailsea jug at Bridgeman photographic site (http://www.bridgemanart.com/image/Nailsea-type-green-bottle-glass-jug-with-white-splash-decoration-c-1800/70cfe02755b84da487f10bd4c88ab429?key=torre%20abbey&thumb=x150&num=15&page=5)? :)

It will be best to post an image of your piece, because it might be subtly different. Often similar items were made by different glassworks in different places at different times, and it can be very difficult to pin down a firm identification, especially for the layperson.

If you're still having trouble, email the photograph to me and I'll resize it for you. (Get my email address by clicking the email icon, which looks like an envelope, under my username at the left of the screen.)

In page that Cathy linked to, the item is titled "Nailsea type green (bottle) glass jug ...". But the picture shows a jug with cranberry-ish glass - not green!

So how much faith can we put in that as a source of reference. But, they did say "Nailsea-type", which is a point in their favour!

How much faith can we put in it as a reference? None at all I would say, Kev. That site is basically a repository of stock photographs.

The link just illustrates the image that bubbadog had found, which might even be different from their piece, and we won't know until we see a picture of the jug in question.

Nailsea type is one of those throwaway terms, mean glass with spots or streaks marvered in. The example has several inconsistencies with the Nailsea glass shown in the Glass Study.

In any case, to confirm Nailsea would need careful examination by people very familiar and some good provenance.

:hi: Hi bubbadog, I've added your photos to the original post. :)

The trick with images is to use a program such as Irfanview or Gimp, and then scale the image so that the longest side is no more than 700 pixels.  Usually this alone will lead to a file size less than 125 kb, but in your case, this wasn't enough, and you'll have to compress the jpg as well. (All jpgs are compressed, but you can take them down to lower resolutions  to make the file size smaller.) To do this, use 'save as', and you'll get a sliding bar with percentage compression - just drag to a lower percentage. Usually I wouldn't go lower than 91%, but yours needed reducing to 83%.

Hope that makes sense!

Here (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=3989&category_id=349&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=6) is an image of a genuine "Nailsea type" of 'splattered' bottle - note it was made in Scotland but it is highly likely to have been by glass makers that had been at Nailsea.

You just compressed the images without reducing the size so all details has gone.

:hiclp: For adding the photos - but... Yours must be a high res camera, because the usual formula isn't working. Now the resolution is too low, and when you expand the pic, it's too pixelated to see the detail. Make the longest side 700 pixels, then reduce the resolution to 90%. If it's still too big, take it down by 2% each attempt. The lower the resolution, the worse the image, and you're better off with a slightly higher res image, but smaller size (700 pixels). If that doesn't work, go back to the original (because the one you'd been working on will be degraded), and take it down to 600 pixels, and save at 95%.

All I do with the pics from my 12MB camera is resize so the longest dimension is 700 pixels and then save as; that works. I don't do anything to the resolution.

Christine & Frank, these were pretty big images. I tried reducing them to the standard 700 px and it didn't do the trick. The same happens with my photos - I have a fairly meaty Olympus SLR (E-30) and reducing them to 700px still leaves a file size that's too big, so I have to take down the resolution a touch as well. This will increasingly be a problem as the resolution of cameras goes up.

Edited to add: Just checked Irfanview - Aha. The default jpeg compression is 80%, which might be why it works consistently for others.

Anyway, that's all OT  :hj: Hope someone can help with the jug :)

All we can say is Nailsea type, you need to visit an appropriate museum or auction house to take it further. Phone first as you don't want to go somewhere that cannot offer knowledge of Nailsea.
