Title: Glass display, looking for inspiration.
Post by: colink on November 18, 2010, 03:15:52 PM
Well now that the collection of carnival glass is growing im now needing to display it sooooooooo what do you display your glass in? Is it on a shelf or in a cabinet? Not sure as to what to purchase to display mine in so any tips/advice would be great, oh and any pictures of your display cabinets would be good as well ta

Hi-Ho!!!

I use the tall glass cabinets you often see in shops for my displays, they are sold by Ikea and cost about £30, I have seven of them dotted around the house and they look great when lit!!

                       Warmest Wishes,

                            John

I have two double illuminated display cabinets I got from Very.co.uk. They have toughened glass shelves and a mirrored back that shows off my glass from all angles.

They cost about £120 each.

I have two of Ikea´s Detolf cabinets too. Then there´s an old reed organ, which I modified
into a cabinet, another cabinet - both lit with UV tubes, different shelves, my writing desk,
my other writing desk, the window sills, small boards above the door cases, two smaller
desks, another shelf, any horizontal place that´s suitable and not cramped already and
finally some pieces of glass are lurking on the floor and wait for others to go....  :24:

And if you ditched the art work in the middle you could sit another shelf right across the gap supported by the two units...............about another 5 or 6 feet of display space! WOW!

When we remodeled the kitchen several years ago the cabinets went to the ceiling, which I liked, so we had them replaced with glass doors and lights.

I pretty much display it anywhere Peggy will let me put it.....  I have two glass wall units with recessed lighting in the ceiling above them, a wood unit in the dining room I have taken over, shelves in the bedroom for perfumes, on the night stands, on the coffee table, on some other tables in the living room.... some wall shelves in the upstairs, along with a desk that has shelving on the front of it, a small glass fronted mid century cabinet.....  for mid century glass   :)

Kinda makes me look obsessed now that I think about it......

This is my favourite thread on the GMB -- I love to see people's collections and how they are displayed. What a wonderful start to a day.  :)

I think 'quality of air' should be taken into consideration when choosing the best way to display a collection.  My glass collection is very small and limited to my wallunit in the living room.  Unfortunately, Krakow has got a very high level of air pollution, and dust gathers on open shelves in a matter of minutes.  I dusted and waxed my wallunit yesterday morning -- the second picture shows how much dust has collected in a 24 hour period.  :'(

My dream is to have a room with wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, glass display cabinets with lights -- and only for my glass.  I'm just waiting for my collection to grow and my husband to either become more understanding of my hobby, or to leave  >:D...

Well, some glass should be displayed nicely, but real collector has problem not "how to display" but "where store all pieces".

I have major storage issues as well, next step is the dreaded cardboard box "display". The glass that isn't tucked away are in this "Billy" bookshelf from IKEA and on my String shelf above the TV.

Yes Anik, I really did copy and paste so I could read what you wrote!!! I would have written it in BOLD!!
Rose, I love the Just Funky tree.....I could just see all my birds and squirrels in that one, but then I would really have Anik's problem!!

I have had some teak units made....I'll take a pic or two, and if they come out OK I will post them.

Otherwise, like all of you....on the mantlepiece, dresser, loo, organ, shelves, windowsills, and sadly....packed in cardboared boxes
Laters.....hopefully! :wsh:

You could always go homemade...

My wallunit is homemade...  my dad came all the way from Canada to design and build some furniture for his most favourite youngest daughter.

By the way, for those of you with hanging shelves, aren't you afraid that the weight of the glass will eventually send the shelf and all the pieces crashing to the floor?

I've loved this thread!  People here as crazy as me!  ;D :24:  Every flat surface in my house is covered in glass - there are too many pics to post!  I tend to keep my Victorian Vaseline glass and similar 'old-fashioned' pieces in old=fashioned cabinets, bought at antique shops.  Everything else is on window sills, tables, the top of filing cabinets and book cases, you name it!

Here's a few pics of my actual cabinets - can't buy any more as I've run out of places to stand them!  I need a few sky-hooks!   ::)

irritating how other people's glass always looks more interesting than your own.   Never feel that mine is displayed well enough - too much is in my three garden sheds, the loft, and poked under other furniture, on the floor, in wicker hampers on top of the wardrobes etc.  -  obviously, I must take an 'O' level in 'How to display Glass'      Emmi, the colours look good against white, but they're exposed, and you must needs dust from time to time, I guess. :)

Right Leni, the D word is banned.  Paul already knows I am a dust slut, so he is just rubbing it in!!!!!  Those photos were taken about 3 years ago, a whole load more glass is on each shelf now, but I see it as being a larger glass area for the dust to settle on therefore being a thinner layer of dust.  LOL!!!  Anyway I see dust as a protective covering!

You can't beat a woman's logic Paul............ :hiclp:

don't you believe it..............try speaking to my wife!! :'(
In fact I'm looking for a woman who is oblivious to dust, has no problem with being ignored for most of the week, is blind to most surfaces being covered in glass, and doesn't object to boot sale goodies cluttering the house.    Oh, and she must have an interest in old things (me) and shhhhh, this is the best bit -  will pay for most things when we do (rarely) go out socially (because most of my money has already gone on you know what) :24:

Whilst we are waiting for my pics to be resized, a word about d**t.
Quentin Crisp said after a few years it doesn't get any deeper and falls off the edge......and my opinion (for what it's worth), is if you don't move anything,  it doesn't show......it isn't the d**t that shows, it's the clean shiny areas when glass pieces are moved!!
So, don't move them!!

I'm of the 'less is more' school of collection display, so I tend to have just a few items - in well-lit niches on bookcases and shelves - that are rotated as the mood takes me.

I, personally, always think it's a bit of a shame when you can't really see... or, consequently, appreciate... individual pieces of glass because there's a mass of other glass in front or behind of it.

So my glass on show tends to look like this:

Keith,  yes,  as long as you aren't bidding against me,  your animals count....bless you for making me feel less of an oddity.  Only 4 more boxes to unpack.

Nic....I agree with you....I wish I was that disciplined!  When I had the teak cabinets made, I promised myself that I would only ever have a few pieces in at a time.....but....well....I was weak, and felt sorry for those that were left out in the cold :'(   (NO comments here please Paul!!).

I am really enjoying seeing everyone's collections.....thank you so much for sharing them :-*.....anybody got any glass animal displays to share? :hi:

Rosie,
After you manipulate the image in Picasa, save a copy with a different name. If you do that the image will stay how you manipulate it. Picasa is an arrogant enough program to think that the only place you will ever view images is with it, so it remembers what you have done to an image as long as you are using their program.....  Just go to "File" "Save as" and give it an appropriate name and location.

if you click to the left there are four more (I know the hippo does not look like a hippo), does anyone else think the fifth one looks like a dinosaur? If not, what?

Oh John,  I love Exbor Hedgehogs.....there were 2 listed this week,  but too expensive....I will have to sell one of my Leerdam ducks to afford one.
I did buy very similar one.....Neubert Bleikristall which will look lovely with an Exbor....

I love Scandinavian Glass and I was silly enough to sell a Hoglund Lady Bottle with Face stopper!!  Eeeeeek!

Yes. I'm sure it is a Dinosaur, and I saw one of the 'Polar Bears' listed recently & was very tempted!!

Thank you for sharing your fabulous collection :-*....I suppose I should catalogue mine....might make me sort them out better!!

I hate to encourage a thread to get out of hand - and this one has certainly lost its way..........but, just for all you animal lovers......two pics. of some vertibrates, although in the main not that recent.   The elephants I have put up some time back, and believe they are provenanced as pipe rests - and date wise, possibly somewhere in the late 1930 to late 1940 period.   The U. example is quite nice, and the owl has a full Baccarat back stamp - roundel and word. :)
