I gave up drinking a long time ago - before good wine hit the shops here!
I have memories of sweet cheap(ish) hock - not the most pleasant stuff around. :-X

I get to sniff Michael's (red) wine though.  A decent Zinfandel or Pinot Noir appeals.

I don't know - her teeth look like dentures - all white and even - completely false, yuk!
She might be older than her face looks!
Botox and surgery, not to mention airbrushing of photos almost make the appearance of an actual model unneccessary these days!  >:D

Can we take it then that you were previously known as brahms-liszt Sue? :wsh:

Yes Thomas your glass is numero uno , the glass i dream of finding in the charity shop :X: i see you drink one of my favourite wines Faustino 1 probably chased by Juan Carlos 1 from a suitable glass , have you tried a good Italian red Barolo to wash down Wild Boar or a simple Rabbit . Keep up the good work SEASONS GREETINGS Johan Von Trilsbach , alias JP  :fc: :sg: :sn: :hi: :ho:

Hi Thomas , your wine selection is as impeccable as your Claret jug selection , I first began drinking Paterninas Faustino N#1 back in the 80s I think before anybody in this country had any idea about the good wines that came from that particular vineyard,I used to travel to Liverpool especially to buy that 1(£4.50p a bottle!!!!!!! at the time ) and also malts from the cask, the cellar owner also had a Spanish restaurant and at each visit was treated to  a meal on the house ,(probably because my friend and I always filled the car to capacity on each visit), once he had only 3 bottles of Paternina Gran Reserva dated 1955 and he gave me one , yuk!!!!!! it was horrible ,needless to say the consumption has gone down greatly over the years and my preference now is for Sancerre and Puilly Fume which I collect on  trips to stay with friends in the Loire Valley, so this Christmas will be stocking up again from the vineyard , though the local(Loire) reds are also very good.

I still say the best taste is achieved from a nice 18thc goblet though !!!!!

  Peter.

hi Peter

i must admit the wine you selected are great ones - especially the sancerre and of course Pouilly Fumé .. but you know before you can use the 18 century goblet you need a nice silver mounted claret jug to decant a fine red wine  :sm:

all the best , Thomas

Thomas — I couldn't help noticing that the feet of your lovely glass and the three Fieldings examples have a striking resemblance to the feet of my Mystery set of tiny tazzas, comports or sweetmeats (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,37211.0.html), which I queried here a few weeks ago.   Unfortunately the discussion headed off in the direction of purpose or function rather than attribution.

These minitazzas have a finely cut star base with the profile of an eight-petalled flower — which I've not seen elsewhere.

I would be most grateful for a photograph of the foot of your glass for comparison.

Have you seen this base star by other manufacturers?

I'm sure I've seen that cut, exactly, on large deep side-plate things, in several donations to Oxfam. Also around antiquey centres, where they sit and collect dust. They're not uncommon, Bernard.

Sue — I thought I had, until I looked at the profile of the cut star.   Most, if not all of the profiles I've seen have been swagged, like telephone wires, or just plain circular.   The difference is quite small.

That is a really stunning glass Thomas, all the lovlier with the light shining through it....is the flower a Fritillaria or a Campanula,  or just a fantasy flower?
How do they achieve the two colours without cutting through to the clear glass, and is there a special name for the technique?

Post by: claretjugcollector on December 21, 2010, 03:49:56 PM
thx rosieposie - i think it could be both - tend more to campanula - i found out that the first layer is yellow then blue - which gives actually greenish in some parts of the glass ..i only know that it is called double cased - must be really difficult not to go to deep ... but don´t know how it is done .. :or:..actually it was really a bargain at an german auction and i am quite sure i won´t get a similar glass for a reasonable price in the future..
