Title: Golden Rabbit on brown Glass.
Post by: rosieposie on December 07, 2010, 12:44:03 AM
Another little mystery here.
A beautifully made gold leaf Rabbit.....the underglass is Brown and there are little detailed eyes.
Looking more carefully, I would say it was brown cased over clear glass with gold predominately on the body and sprinles of gold on the ears, tail and feet.
13cm's tall.
Does anyone out there know the maker......I am hoping it is Murano,  and a good artist....Barovier or Seguso would be nice!!??

I agree, Sue, definately not IOW....wrong colour, wrong size, wrong shape....I have lots of IOW, love them and know them well.

It is my belief that this is Murano,  probably a very good maker as it is so beautifully executed....come on Murano Buffs.....where are you?? :usd:

So you have asked for Humbugs for Christmas or you will be cross???? Yum,  will you share if you get any? :fc:

It has all the signs of being from Murano, but I don't know which company. I looked through my files quickly, but couldn't find this exact form. The heavy gold foil on dark glass is very nice. It looks a bit like something Gambaro might have made, but the back feet have me puzzled.

No, Rosie, I don't like humbugs.
We don't "do" christmas, not in the commercial sense.
Michael's from Eire - it's called "the Birthday" over there; one says "many happy returns", not merry or happy humbug of any sort.
I occassionally wish folk a happy Yuletide, but have to kowtow to the religious nonsense to keep the superstitious happy in their delusions, no matter how unhappy and uncomfortable it makes me.
Where's the respect for aethiests?  >:D

anyway, sorry,  :hj:  back to golden bunny!

:ru: :fc: Christmas is a wonderful time of year. Trouble is I get too tired to really enjoy it. Wish I were a kid again.

I looked at the rabbit again. I get a feeling that it is an older being from the 1950s. Something about the glass makes me think that. The heavy gold foil, punched eyes, and crimped front paws make me favor the Seguso companies, but Barovier, Aureliano Toso, and others are still possibilities. I'll be quiet now unless I find this exact critter somewhere.   :usd:

Oh Sue,  you had better have a look at my Angel posting....repent,  Christmas is a good excuse for a party!! :ho:
I'll have all your humbugs,  they are best filling extractors on the planet....in fact I don't know why all dentists don't have them on their waiting room tables along with the boring 'Mouthwash Monthly' magazines, so that they wouldn't have to spend ages hurting your teeth and your purse, removing them!! ;D , only to replace them at even greater cost!!!

I digress .....

Yes Anita,  I think Barovier or Seguso....have done all along.  Does it help to know that it has the most amazingly resonating ping when you flick it?
Oh why don't artists always sign their work....back to the 'never wash labels off' moan!

I don't drink, I really don't like parties. I don't believe in "angels".
I detest the compulsory "cheer". Yah boo sucks to it all. :P
I have nothing to repent.

Should a solid thing ping?????

I think we went 'Off Piste' (to use a Winter phrase :sn:) here,  so may I bring this wonderful rabbit :anb: back into the limelight to see if there are any other suggestions please? :sun:

I've really enjoyed reading this thread - nothing like a bit of irreligious banter........... Where's the respect for aethiests?.........sadly wish I knew Sue  -  but we may take comfort from the following.........The whole thing is so patently infantile, so foreign to reality, that to anyone with a friendly attitude to humanity it is painful to think that the great majority of mortals will never be able to rise above this view of life. — Sigmund Freud.    Mind you I love the 10 days or so that I get away from the office....the good food etc., so as an atheist I benefit from this religious mania. :)
However, to the point of my banter...........If you look at page 70 in Leslie Pina's 'Fifties Glass', there are two small vases that whilst of cased construction  -  are externally of a very similar colour.  These are Barbini pieces, and are described as 'clear glass filled with copper particles'.     You understand that this is a suggestion only, and coupled with the fact that I know naff all about rabbits or Murano glass, should tell you everything.   What do you call a guy who looks down rabbit holes...............a burrow surveyor :sg: :fc: :ooh:  Now you watch this get shoved over to the cafe ;D

I just found this,  and was so excited,  and look what you naughty boys have done....Highjacked my thread!!

I've got quite a few Barbini pieces,  and this is much more 'stocky'  than any of those. Very very like the rabbit in the thread above.

About the rabbit in the link I'd have to say, "Show me the label." It doesn't look like any of the Seguso rabbits I've seen. Your rabbit is much nicer, rosieposie. The coloring of your rabbit does remind me of Barbini, but the shape doesn't. I remain clueless about your rabbit.

We'll leave this here for now rather than send the poor wee bunny to the Cafe where he may end up as rabbit pie... :wsh:   but we'll clean up the OT stuff in due course.  Do try to stay OT though guys - it makes less work for us poor overworked moderators!  >:D

I've done some searches for the rabbit, but no luck yet. I want to comment on the pose and technique. The pose is one used a good bit for Murano rabbits. The hands and nose remind me of some V. Nason rabbits, but Nason didn't use this technique that I've ever seen. The technique of applying gold to the surface is a favorite one. Companies or people that are most famous for the look include the Barovier companies, Martinuzzi, and Barbini. There are others, of course, but the technique gives the rabbit a higher status than your average run-of-the-mill cased rabbit. It's a keeper.

There is a couple of things that make the design different than many. The hind feet that stick out like balls and the long tail. The long tail reminds me of a couple of animals I have, but I won't mention company names because it would just be confusing without something more concrete.

Adding something -- most of the opaque solid-looking animals are not solid. Of course, one doesn't learn they have a cavity in the middle until the animal arrives broken in the mail. The ears will ping on any animal because they are thin and vibrate fairly easily.

Thank you for all that information Anita, and for bringing us back on track!!

Looking at your Murano Zoo, I am now wondering if Gambaro & Poggi might be the maker,  I know you hinted at it earlier.  Your little dog has a lot of the 'chunky' attributes. I'm afraid Irather dismissed it to start with, because I have a G&P elephant that is SO different,  and a duck I sold because I didn't like it!

Just to confirm  this little bunny weighs a lot,  and has a solid clear glass core....it is defitaely not hollow.

Once we have found out who made it Anita,  you are welcome to add the pictures to your Murano Zoo if you would like to.
Would you like pictures of the elephant for your Zoo,  it has labels and is very different to most ellies in style & form?

Yes, I would love to have pictures for the zoo.

Mario Gambaro did many things that had gold on the outside. Mario worked for Archimede Seguso when he was young. I believe he may have also worked with Seguso Vetri d'Arte. Everything in Murano seems to tie in together.  :)

I notice that there is a 'fish' presently on the Petrides Great Glass site (under new arrivals) with this brownish/gold/aventurine look.........and is being attributed to Ercole Barovier.   There is some similarity.

Thanks for the Heads up Paul.  I see what you mean....very similar colouring,  I wonder what Anita thinks....ANITA!!!! Are you there??

Paul did you see the JIP vase (Loetz)?  As soon as I saw it, I thought of you and your little 'sermon' about what truly constitutes a JIP vase!!  You see I do listen...or read!

Oooops there you go.....gone in a flash :wsh:....you may yet get a new name you know!!

Just found this link

http://www.carters.com.au/index.cfm/item/85088-a-murano-stylised-glass-dog-attractively-presented-in-aventurine/

this has a similar chunkiness to the rabbit,  and is attributed to Seguso......hmmmmm, did I mention I thought it might be a Seguso piece earlier in the thread?

Ah, that's Carter's, an Australian price guide. The attributions seem to be largely guesswork, certainly if the Australian glass section is any example.

I'm nudging this lovely chappie again because I have just seen this on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160536666773&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123

If you took his carrott away, it looks very like my rabbit in form,  so I wonder if it is Gambaro Poggi after all???  Anita-----are you there today?  What do you think?

It's hard to say. The feet, tail, and ears of yours are different in shape, but yours could be G&P still. This is a standard rabbit form, so it can be difficult to say which company. The thing most nice about yours is it's gold is on the outside of dark glass. It may be easiest to write G&P to ask them. They may recognize something in it that we are unaware of.

Just noticed the rabbit on eBay is cased. The rabbit is painful to look at, the seller cropped so close and had such a steep angle on the rabbit.

Hi Anita,  I thought the back feet, the tail and the ears were very similar to mine,  funny tubes for feet and a worm-like tail that goes straight up the back.....Ears are almost identical.
Are we looking at the same rabbit?  Also Chris's blue Bucella Cristelli ellie is very similar (except for the ears and trunk of course!) so it could be one of theirs???

Do you know how to contact G&P please Anita??

You can contact G&P by email at info@gambaropoggiglass.com. I hope they'll be able to help. The tail and feet on the eBay rabbit may just look different because of the unusual angle used to shoot the pictures.

I was just going through the site Anita's put up, with profits going for the tornado relief - (it's crammed with birdies) but I found this, which reminded me of the bunny.

We'd best not start going along the lines of "great minds" Rosieposie - not after the last fiasco, when we both got it completely and utterly wrong.....

I wondered if you'd ever get out of that site!  :-*

Ooooh, Sue, you have to be wrong sometimes, don't you, to help make others look good!! :pb: And anyway, I am still very much a novice about glass.......so I forgive myself constantly for the errors I make.
I am off to look at all those birdies you mentioned!! :wsh:
