Title: My first Murano? buy

Hi All

This was my first buy in 1985. I found it in a second hand shop in southern NSW covered in dust. I paid about $10 for it and it is out on display more than most items I have.

Looking at it now I am not sure it is Murano. Any ideas would be welcome.

It is 22.5" 57cm long and 7" 180mm high.

A fascinating piece to start a collection with. It baffles me, but I thought I would get the ball rolling. What I've seen that's closest to this are pieces from Lorraine glass in Canada, which would means it probably is a Murano-type design, as Lorraine workers were from Murano. But that's all very hypothetical.

The points of similarity are the colour, the ribs ending in round fingers, and the overall scale.

Thanks David - I think at this stage that is going to end up in the ether! It is funny I always assumed it was Murano without taking a close look at it. Only last week did I start to suspect it wasn't when I took a closer look at it.

It has a polished pontil but apart from it not being moulded it doesn't prove anything.

I have another piece that someone thought was Chanel? glass from Canada. Maybe there is a connection, certainly a local glass company brought out some 'Murano' blowers in the 60's (I think) to start a new line and there are a few pieces about but they were not very popular and they didn't continue with them.

That would be Chalet, another company operating in Canada with workers from Murano. I don't think it's Chalet, though. I have seen some Chalet on eBay from Australia.

And a Merry Christmas to you and yours, too. I suspect your Christmas might be a little warmer and drier than ours.

Don't know about drier David it has been piddling down here and we are cleaning up from wide spread floods. Had our first warm and dry week but expecting storms today.

Still all in all rather be here than there. Can't stand the cold.
