The only Whitefriars streaky paperweight I have ever owned had coloured ribbons . The ribbons in these possible Whitefriars streakies are made with (possibly) flattened star canes . Firstly, are they Whitefriars (please!) and were canes used for the ribbons normally ? Diameter 8 cm , height 7 cm for both. There are three internal large bubbles in each weight . Thanks for looking ! :sg:

Here is the other one ! :sn:
-
Yes 100 % W/Fs made by Ray Annenberg you can often see the star at the end of the pulled cane . jp
-
Thanks very much John...really good news !! I thought they might be (that's why I bought them !) but the one that I had didn't show any indicaction that the ribbons were, infact, made from paperweight canes ! Do you know if this is the case with all ribbons in streakies ? Ta, Mike.
-
No they dont all show the cane end , the three bubbles are sometimes elongated . :fc:
-
Nice finds! :D The ones with cane ends visible are 'sought-after' ;)
-
Thanks John & Leni !
I bought them in the Gloucester Antiques Centre which is well worth a visit if you ever find yourself in Gloucester. They were tucked away on the second floor. I picked up one and convinced myself that they 'surely must be' and then noticed the other one and got a bit.... :rah:....you know that feeling....as you do in these situations. I paid £16 each, but the seller (who wasn't there) didn't know they were W/fs (at lest they weren't marked as such). I only half knew they might be !
It was the cane ends which I was unsure about...but I convinced myself they must be W/F star canes . Sometimes you just have to go with a little bit of gut-instinct ..... Talking of guts, I can't help thinking tape worms here :24:.
Only kidding...I really understand the appeal of these weights , they are superb & very heavy.

These stretched cane weight were made in three designs, the first, like your, has three bubbles in a triangular pattern above the caes. The second type is strretched canes covered in small bubbles and the third type has elongated bubbles going from the middle downwards. Worth buyinf the guide to Whitefriars weights whihc Brain Slingsby has produced as it illustrates virtually all the Whitefriars paperweights.

What Ho! I have been collecting these paperweights for years and have about 35 of them.
They are catalogued as 4 different styles.
The first 2 styles started production about 1977. These are much more common and found in the 1978 & 1980 catalogues.
9850 - 3 Bubble
9851 - Controlled Bubble
The second 2 styles are less common and only found in the 1980 catalogue. In my experience the egg shaped is the rarest.
9893 - Egg Shaped
9894 - Stretched Bubble

Thanks very much Wolfie,...a very useful guide indeed and some lovely photos !
Do you know if they were all made by Ray Annenburg or was it a design originated by him ?
Dave thanks for the info. on Brians book...another one for my list !
Cheers, Mike.

What Ho Mike! I know Ray Annenberg quite well and have spoken to him about these weights on a couple of occasions. They were all designed and made by Ray, who was of course the Gaffer at Whitefriars.
He also made slightly smaller ones after leaving Whitefriars, these are uncommon and Im lucky to have 2 of them. See below,
-
Really delightful pair of weights ! It is good to know, first-hand , that these are only by Ray. No need to sign them !
After Whitefriars closed, where did Ray go ? If you don't mind me asking....would love to know !
Ta, Mike.

Well I'm blowed ! I'm off to find a copy of the film Scapegoat starring Alex Guiness and Ray Annenberg ! So he went to a small glass firm in Cambridge ! I wonder what kind of glass they were producing ?

-
Indeed Hobbsy! I was lucky enough to purchase the pair a few years ago when they weren't popular!!!
-
Hi W-H That second one with the dark center core is an absolute stonker .
-
Hi Mike,
After leaving Whitefriars Ray worked as a hospital porter but has now retired.
Dave
-
Ray came out of retirement recently to do some occasional work at Adam Aaronson's studio. He has made paperweights and vases, including some weights using Whitefriars canes, saved from the factory when it closed down. Here are a couple of mine.
-
Oh my, Leni ..... How lovely!!! :D Your photos are a bright treat for a foggy morning in my corner of the world. :kissy:
Lily
-
How teriffic ! A real joy to behold , I hope Ray wants to stay semi-retired for years to come !
I remember seeing some Whitefriars canes for sale on ebay, they were neatly arranged in a plastic Petridish stuck into bluetac and they looked like a close-packed paperweight . I asked the seller the question 'these canes look like they are stuck in Bluetac , do they usually come like this ?' ......I just got a terse reply ! :-[ :ooh:
-
Hi Ray set a few up in blue tack for friends i was lucky enough to be given one by Ray i am proud to say , i believe the others were charged but not a lot , THANKS Ray . ;D
-
Thanks John,
That explains it then ! ....I thought it was a half-finished paperweight !
I hope your canes will end up, one day, as a beautiful paperweight with Ray's help :X: ;)
