Title: camer glass?
Post by: rebecca on December 29, 2010, 01:16:09 AM
i have inherited 2 large vases that look like murano glass but my grandmother has always called them camer. she purchased them between 50 and 60 years ago. i can not find anything similar anywhere and little information on camer on the internet...i see camer chandliers, but that is about it. does anyone know anything of antique camer and glass and how do i research these pieces? thanks!

Different companies made glass for Camer. One Murano company that made a lot of Camer glass was Barbini. I believe that one of the Seguso companies may have also made some Camer glass, though I'm not sure of this. If you take pictures of your glass and post the pictures, someone may be able to help you more.

Just a note to agree with Anita that photographs would be needed to make a positive id, and to further explain that Camer Glass was an import company based in New York that brought in Murano glass. As well as glass by Barbini, they also imported at least some lighting fixtures by Venini. These are both well known Murano companies.

also, the pink vase has gold flecks in it and kind of does a fade out from one side of the vase to the other, from pink with gold flecks to a deep red. thanks for any imput!

Hi Rebecca,

These pics are too small to be seen clearly - you've either posted thumbnails, or you've made the pictures too small. If you use Irfanview or Paint to resize your photos, make the longest side about 700 pixels and then the file size should be small enough to upload here. See Anne's Techie Tip on posting pictures (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6522.0.html) for more.

If that doesn't work, try 600 pixels. If after all that you're still having trouble, let me know.

Even at the size they are, they look like very nice pieces!

Mod: I've edited my second sentence above because it was completely garbled.

Yes, these definitely have to be seen better. The finish on the basket and the lines of the bowl are important.

Yes, much. The basket looks to me that it may be an Archimede Seguso polveri piece. Does the red look like it is powder added to the glass? It is difficult to tell from the photo. The bowl looks like it could be a Seguso -- either Vetri d'Arte or Archimede -- sommerso piece. It would be nice to get some input from the rest of the group since I've not seen this basket design before.

If it looks like powder, it is most likely an A. Seguso polveri piece. I found a vase that is of the same ilk at http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/rare-large-archimede-seguso-polveri-art-glass. You can put Archimede Seguso polveri or Archimede Seguso sfumato into google and it will show others. Nice inheritance! It is the first time I've seen the basket.

BTW, I am totally dumb when it comes to sommerso. The colors do look Seguso to me, but I'll have to leave that one to people who know more.

My immediate thought on seeing the basket was polveri by A Seguso. I haven't seen a basket quite that shape, where the handle is created by almost what looks like a hole through the piece, leaving a very thick handle. That's a little in the style of Fratelli Toso, who made many baskets. It's a very nice piece, whomever made it.

I can't make out enough detail in the second piece to comment, but I certainly can't see anything that would contradict what Anita says.

They both look like quality pieces, which reinforces my suspicion that Camer imported higher quality Murano than some of the other import companies.

Also, I found an A. Seguso machia basket with very much the same shape on p. 31 of Murano Magic, which suggests your piece is A. Seguso and that he did these baskets using some very attractive and desirable techniques.
