Hi I bought this little glass cottage about a year ago, and have never been able to find out who made it. It is about 4" long and the base is quite roughly finished. It is pressed glass and has a few bubbles in it. I bought it because I thought I could use it to put a tea light in, but the chimney is not patent, so I can't!
I thought it might be Scandinavian, but I now have my doubts.
Can anyone help with the maker please??
-
looks thatched so it will rather be from the wetlands not from the rocky nordic lands...
-
oh, I don't know - cud be that the Vikings might have had a hankering for some chocolate box dream of a thatched roof :usd: But seriously rosie, what do you mean you can't because the chimney is not patent - sorry to seem thick (I'm not usually so dim - sometimes even reasonably bright - I think) ;) Personally I think most people's idea of an idyllic cottage would include a thatched roof.
-
patent = open as far as I know Paul
perhaps something to do with Rosie's nursing and a Patent Ductus Arteriosis ;D I only know this because my son had this heart problem ;)
-
Paul: If you put a candle in a jamjar, it will burn. If you put the lid on, the flame is starved of oxygen, and then is extinguished. If you put this cottage over the candle, the flame will go out because there is no oxygen. If the chimney were patent (open, thank you flying free!!) then there would be an orifice (that's an opening!) for the smoke to escape and the oxygen to enter and feed the flame!! :usd:
flying free: That is quite a serious condition for a little newborn baby, and is much less common in boys, I do hope he is alright now.
Biology and science lessons over....who made this little cottage PLEASE??????
-
all right.........all right............clever clogs ......then why can't we bothery well say 'open', you know I can't cope with difficult words - and anyway, sooooo, I thought it meant a pair of black dancing shoes ;D thanks to both of you. In view of your circumstances f.f., I hope you won't think my comments insensitive. :)
-
Rosie, yes he's doing ok and Paul, no not at all. In fact it came in very handy recently when the plumber was explaining something about a patent valve or similar on our radiator, and I smugly sat there and resisted the urge to ask what it meant, even though I know he was expecting me to ;D

Glad to hear he is doing well m (or ff). Isn't it lovely when you can be smug and knowledgeable at the same time :rah:
Paul, I know you know a lot of long words....they are just different ones to mine! :24:
Now, before we get pushd into the Café, WHO MADE MY COTTAGE PLEASE!!!!!
-
Yeah, Rosie, I agree ...
... but shouting loudly in red might make some of us moderators consider your thread worthy of being "cafe'd" by your own actions ;D

????
Could it be a Glass Candy Container ???? made by some company

According to the New Oxford English Dictionary, patent used in that way is a medical term only...
-
Hi Rose.....I think you are absolutely right!! I have looked on the net for Candy Containers, and although I can't see a cottage like mine, they all seem to have a similar rough finish to the base.
Thanks once again for your help :kissy:.....hope I can help you sometime.
Have you any idea how they might have sealed it when filled with candy?
Does this mean there is a whole new collection out there waiting for me?? :spls:
Sorry KevH, I promise to be a good girl in future. :-[ I would hate to be 'moderated off the premises'.

I seem to recall that some of them were sealed by having a piece of card stuck to their bottoms.
I know we've discussed candy containers on the board before - mostly albeit a good while back. Search finds these posts which might be helpful:

Off topic - but re the word patent, I was surprised when the plumber used it Christine. I've never heard anyone use it other than in connection with medical terms. However he was describing a valve on our radiator, much like my son's heart valve :o
however,
under see adjective here, where it seems to have meanings other than purely medical

Interestingly, on that basis, it might be as well to recognise the pronunciation differences between the different meanings.
Where we mean a registered patent, the emphasis is on PAT as in the way we would say pat the dog, or Postman Pat, whereas the patent meaning open is pronounced PAY as in pay day, or payment.
I was using the word as an adjective, not a noun, so in that context I hope it is patently obvious that I meant the chimney was not open.
Much more important than this is who ate all the candy?

Yes, there is a whole new world out there of Cute Glass Candy Containers. As Ann said, I think they had Cardboard in the bottom to hold the Candy in. As to who ate the Candy.....we will never find out :24: :24:
I hope this lead might be right to figure out who made the item..................I will keep looking around too :X:

Good morning Rose, did you mean to leave another link?
Rosie. :)

Nope, meant the *lead* that your house was a Glass Candy Container.
A whole new field for you to collect
I have already hunted around to find some sites to look around for other Glass Candy Containers. Not sure if there are any houses listed there, but many different types of containers:

Saw this on eBay, and although it isn't the same house, I was staggered to see the price it was expected to sell for! :o

I have yet to find a thatched cottage, so does this mean mine is rarer??

Update to the Glass cottage thread:
I now have two hollow glass cottages,
two identical but solid glass cottages,
two glass bungalows
and a glass Skyscraper!!
-
The solid cottage:
-
The little Church:
-
All lit up for Christmas!!
-
The centre of the village:
-
Where is the skyscraper? My guess would be made for souvenir/gift trade and not necessarily candy containers. Try and match the building to a real one.... they are probably close to an original but could be stylised.
-
That's a proper little Christmas Glassville you have there Rosie, I love it!
-
Thanks Anne... I did consider putting the skyscraper in and a few snowy Hadeland mini animals, but it looked better without. I missed out on the M&S Battery candle Christmas Trees which would have been lovely in between the houses, but hey ho you can't have it all!!
