Hello,
I was smitten when I saw these fishy drinking glasses on an Internet auction site, and my imagination lead me to believe they were something really special. But now, as they are in my possession, they're not as wonderful as I initially thought.
I've got a set of 6 (2 of each pattern). Though the bases are thick, the glasses themselves are quite thin and delicate. Each glass is a slightly different height (about 10cm tall and hold appx. 150ml). The base is lumpy and each of the 4 feet have got circular impressions.
The fish are not hand-painted (rather obvious now that I see them :spls:).
Does anyone know the maker of my glasses, and the period they were made?
Thank you for looking.
P.S. A friend told me a fancy word for the fish -- I planned on using the word and impressing people with my eloquence and intelligent vocabulary... unfortunately, I've misplaced my little note, hence my use of 'fish' ;D

Hi Anik - they are GOLD FISH, IMHO. see HERE (http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/willow/goldfish-info0.gif) Have seen this bottom before, but a name does not jump right out at me in the Moment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shubunkin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shubunkin) As wikipedia says "similar to the Common Goldfish." LOL - so at least I was in the right Fish Department :24: :pb: lol
Any ideas on the maker of the glasses, JP? Thanks

I seem to have a couple of those glasses with pictures of nuts on them & always assumed they were Nutella glasses, made in Italy.

 It is 4:48 a.m here, and I have not been to sleep yet -- so I am going to take a guess at these.
I keep thinking Libbey Glass here. Why, I do not know.....except Libbey glass used this type of color lots. They used gold gilt on items. Look a bit retro to me and something like they might do ----- but I am not sure that Libbey glass did bases like this with kinda 4 legs rather than just a flat base. So I dunno.
This is just a Guess and it might be all :po: as a *guess*.

Ah, JP, so now you're a comedian... but you're also a very clever man because "shubunkin" was the fancy word on my misplaced note. ;D Thank you!
Ivo, Nutella glasses? Perhaps with pictures of nuts, that might certainly be feasible, but fish? Italy might be a lead -- out of curiosity, do your glasses also have feet?
By the way, it would have never crossed my mind that Nutella glasses are collectable... I feel like a heel for getting rid of my son's which we had amassed over a period of about 6 years. Maybe I should turn into a hoarder...
Thank you for the replies!

JP
You got it wrong. These are not Shubunkins but Calico Fantails. Shubunkins are multicolour single tail goldfish(common goldfish shape-or comet). Where Calico fantails are multicolour fantails.

...but do they go well with chips? :o ;D
-
I have no recollection of the precise Nutella shape - I threw them out long time ago. But I can give you a minimum date for the ones with 4 feet. The idea is ripped from Sarpaneva I-Lasi which were introduced in 57 if I'm not mistaken.
