Title: Yellow cased vase with lid
Post by: yesvil on January 27, 2011, 09:32:20 PM
I have had a few in this style I presumed to be Chinese on account of quality, but this one seems to have a little more quality.

It's 220mm tall

I've looked but not found - Any ideas?

What's the base like?

I can't see an awful lot of wear (Probably means Chinese)

I was looking for a pontil mark. Wear is irrelevant in many cases. China has been making glass for a long time and its glass can be good quality. I would say perhaps not Chinese in this case, but I don't know where it's from. Is the rim ground? Check to see if it glows bright green under a UV light.

Thanks Lustrousstone

No, nothing under a black light. I'm not sure if this is what you mean by "ground rim" but it has a delicate bevel which is only really noticeable under magnification.

There are basically two ways to finish rims: fire polished, which means heat quickly with a flame, or grinding with or without adding a bevel. Fire polishing is generally at least partly automated these days. It gives a smooth rounded rim of the sort found on modern drinking glasses.

Ah! interesting. So Ground with bevel should have been my answer - I'm getting there.

No other opinions on this?

Just to add it's quite weighty for it's size (and in comparison to others in this style I have handled) about 700g
