The date cane appears to be hexadecimal ... "78h8" :)

Fratelli Toso judging from the canes, I have seen labelled versions.

I emailed the seller shortly after it was listed to tell him it was 100% Murano (IMHO).

Well - not really ;): hexadecimal only goes up to F (for 15) - would have to be vingesimal (base 20) to inlude H. Then "78H8" converts to "59548" (decimal).

The vingesimal system is also known as the "Mayo numbers" - could someone familiar with the Mayo calender possibly tell us which year this is on our calendar?

Anyone wanting to try other numbering systems - check http://www.convertworld.com/de/ziffern/Vigesimal.html.

Err, as I see it Wuff,  '17' base 10 would be 'H' base 18.  No need to go as far as base 20.

Correct, Alan - but base 18 is not really an "established" numbering system - at least I don't know of any "real life" application...... Sorry - I forgot the paperweight in question is such a real life example >:D.
