Hi, this vase is a piece that I desperately want to find out more about. It's not mine, it's from a seller I do a lot of business with. We're sort of stuck in negotiations because she wants the sort of money for it that I really don't want to pay without knowing what exactly I'm buying (it's about 3 x my normal budget limit).
She's kindly let me use some photo's to find out more. If we can attach a name to the piece, we can decide if a mutual agreeable transaction is possible, or whether I should leave it alone.
It's 23.5 cm high. We know it's not unique - Hans at www.artglassleiden.nl also has 2 of these (in blue and green). He said it might be Zwiesel, but I'm not accepting that on face value (he's not always right with his attributions). It's completely unmarked. It appears to my eyes to be mold blown.
I do think it's German or Czech, 60s or more likely 70s, with possibly Scandinavian as a remote possibility.
Any and all ideas and observations welcome,
-
Hi Astrid,
I can see why you are tempted to push the limits -- very nice piece of glass!
Today I came across a vase by Carl-Einar Borgström for Björkshult on this site http://www.starkeld.com/showprod3.asp?cat=322 (http://www.starkeld.com/showprod3.asp?cat=322) (7th from bottom) which bears some similarities to yours -- ground rim in circle form, bottom does not look too differently IMO either. It's just more peaky than bubbly :).
On the GMB is a thread where some Björkshult pieces are depicted -- one also with a very bubbly pattern: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5033.msg123315.html#msg123315 (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5033.msg123315.html#msg123315)
I may be completely wrong, but perhaps Scandinavia is more than a remote possibility...

Sorry, no idea about your vase, Astrid. They frequently pop up on ebay.de with various
and unconvincing attributions, but I haven´t seen a labelled one so far.
How about inviting Hans here? He´s got some really nice pieces.

I met Hans once last year when I bought a few pieces off him as a novice collector and made a personal visit to pick them up - which was great, because his collection is really great to have a look at. It made a lasting impression on me and probably was one of the reasons I started collecting German glass later on. He has so much great glass he has rented a separate storage space and exchanges the pieces he keeps at his home a few times a year. I am now frustrated that I didn't buy a few German pieces he had for sale at the time.
I told him then about glassmessages and he made some vague noises about trying the site some day, but to my knowledge he never has posted something here. I know he has met Ivo as well, but apparently that didn't help either. Ah well, it's a free world. I wish he would find the time to update his site again, though. He hasn't posted anything since July last year.

If it was Czech and documented as such, I'm sure someone would have chimed in by now.
That makes me think it is German after all (up to the usual pioneers to make something of it).
Dirk, you wouldn't happen to know the average price they make on ebay.de?

Thanks Michael, I had a good long search and looked at as much Björkshult pieces I could find. It's certainly a possibility, but so far I haven't seen something to convince me entirely. The difference I see is that most Björkhult pieces are more subtle in their uses of pattern and colour. The blue one I posted is extremely 'in your face', both in colour and in form - there's nothing subtle about it.

The vase on the starkeld.com site reminded me just enough to give a little bump to this interesting piece :)
The overall shape and especially the cylindrical rim looked very similar to me.
So the search must go on! I am sure this one can be resolved...

~20-40€ when I had them on my watch list. Shall I send you a mail when the next one comes up? :)

Sure, the seller I'm talking about wants a lot more for it, and I'd still like to add it to my collection.
