hi, i wonder if anyone can help me in identifying this item and its use? the spout is detachable and the amethyst bottle is curved in on one side, it is 12" tall inc the silver spout, it has a chinese bat and some chinese writing on the base. I have googled extensively and drawn a blank. Any help appreciated.

Moroccan rose water sprinkler - not sure where they produce these, the glass might even be form Spain.

Really! a rose water sprinkler, can you tell me is it used in cooking or just to spray around a room ? and is the bat insignia not only a chinese emblem in that case , sorry so many more qu's but thanks for your help.

Could you photograph the Chinese writing,it might be of help ;D
-
yes here is a photo of the bat and the writing within
-
That looks more like Arabic to me,which would fit with Ivo's Moroccan attribute ;D
-
ok well thanks for your help, the bat must be a morroccan symbol too in that case, i thought it was exclusively a Chinese symbol. well live and learn and thanks to you both for your assistance and info

Arabic writing, and the rose water makes the air smell nice and helps settle the dust I think?

Are you sure there is a bat depicted? I am quite fond of bats....... ::)

...can you have them with chips? sorry :pb: :pb: :pb:

I don't see why not Keith, difficult to catch though unless they are hibernating. >:D You would be breaking the law in this country as bats are a protected species.

In the Middle East, a guest is greeted with a sprinkling of rosewater on his/her hands as a sign of welcome.
The sprinkler is filled with rosewater to the top of the lower container. The sprinkler is then turned upside down and held in the right hand with the "bulb" resting in the palm of the hand and the long neck pointing downwards, between the middle and ring fingers. The sprinkler is then shaken and drops of rosewater come out of the top. ( Hope that makes sense )
Don't think it is a bat, more like a way to enclose the writing.
best wishes, a40ty

I see it now, silly me. A sort of bat shaped decorative panel enclosing the text, would that be called a cartouche?
