Title: St Louis Paperweights
Post by: mjr on February 28, 2011, 12:56:08 PM
Does anyone have any reference info. catalogues or any other knowledge about St Louis weights?

I am trying to find out what weights they issued for the Coronation in 1953.
I have just acquired 10. Two are sulphides of QE2 and DoE together on clear, one is sulphide of QE2 alone on transluscent red, and the other 7 are all sulphides of QE2 (some white, some silver) all within various coloured single cane circle on a variety of coloured bases.
I am assuming coronation as the bases states "couronnement 2-6-53", and the image of QE2 is young (two young for a silver jubilee) (I have a Bacarrat silver jubilee sulphide and she has aged (gracefully, God bless her)

Ingold mentions two major types - one with, the other without millefiori. The image in the book is one with millefiori, top and 6 side facets. 6 different base colours are mentioned: dark blue, turquoise blue, red, clear, plus blue and red jasper ground. Some 1300 weights (all together) were made - to be sold in the US only. Only a single overlay weight (white) is known - in a private collection. No weight with QE2 and DoE together is mentioned.

thanks for info.   This matches -  I have two on clear which are 6+1 facets. The others - red, very dark blue (I thought it was black), turqoise, red and blue jasper are all 5+1 facets.
The other 3 have similar looking sulphides. All are without millefiore. One is unfaceted on a red ground, the other two which are the ones with QE2 & Phillip are facetted, clear and with cut base.
And they came from USA
