Hi everyone, I wonder if you can help with the name of the maker of this set of bowls. It is a dessert set and has a lovely quilted pattern. I have had it for years, and used it a couple of times, but I am afraid of damaging it as there are no spares.
Any help will, as always, be very much appreciated. :kissy:

Not one I remember seeing before, but I would bet it was uranium glass.

Hi Christine :hi:
I did the black-light test and it doesn't seem to glow at all....I was surprised, because I would have put money on it!!
It is a beautiful set, but I can't find it on Pamelas wonderful Pressglas site....unless I can't see for looking! So any help would really be appreciated.

:hi: Rosie
I never saw something like these and this pattern is unknown to me also - very sorry :pb:
There is a certain similarity to a Zabkowice/Poland pattern # 1280 and 1281, however with completely different base (flowers and others).
Maybe we can ask Glen to have a look at your images ? She has investigated a lot of Zabkowice Carnival over the years, perhaps she recognizes them? :X:

Hello Pamela :hi: Thank you for taking a look at this lovely set....I was so hoping you would know it, but it must be very unusual if you have never seen it before......
I have had it for about 30 years and bought it in a boot sale, so I have no other history to help with.
Perhaps someone can alert Glen to have a look at it......can a moderator help by changing the title to attract her attention??? Might that help?
-
I've dropped Glen a note and asked if she has a few minutes free if she can pop in and take a peek.
-
Thank you Anne, you are very kind to do that for me. :kissy:

I have looked through all my Polish catalogue and other archive material re. Hortensja, Stolle Nieman and Zabkowice to see if this pattern was present. It isn't. I can see the similarity to the Zabkowice #1280 and #1281 but there are too many dis-similarities (imho) to call it for Zabkowice. The pattern is slightly different, the intersections of the lines don't have such a bold starburst effect, the edge of the entire piece is very different, but most of all, the base is all wrong. The Zabkowice pieces with the 1281 and similar patterns have a very shiny, polished base, often with a floral motif, as Pamela noted.
I don't think your piece is from Zabkowice, based on the evidence I have available to me.
To see the Zabkowice #1281 for yourself, you can look at my OLD website (the image isn't yet on our current website):

Glen, thank you so much for all of that input, :kissy: I really do appreciate your time, and I agree that it doesn't seem to be any of those, so you and Pamela are both correct......now where do I turn?
-
Glen, I wish to thank you very much too :fwr:
Not only that I haven't seen Rosie's bowls, I also did not handle one of those Zabkowice patterns 1280 and 1281 'in the flesh' :-[

:fwr: :fwr: :fwr: Thank you Pamela and Rosie - and also Anne too for alerting me. I wish I could have answered the puzzle though

:rah: good news, Rosie, I traced a photo in Pressglas-Korrespondenz, unfortunately again the full catalogue is only visible to subscribers :
http://www.pressglas-korrespondenz.de/archiv/pdf/pk-2008-4w-05-mb-schwepnitz-1968.pdf
Following PK the maker is EITHER Schwepnitz OR Bernsdorf OR Sachsenglas, all three being members of their 'Verkaufsgemeinschaft' ('marketing pool');
no pattern name indicated, I'm afraid.
For those here who may verify this: photo # "11" of Abb. 2008-4-05/008 on page 11/15
How did I find it? Colour and 'orange-peel' structure led me to eastern Germany - that's all :wsh:
;D

Oh Pamela, what can I say!! You are absolutely wonderful!!
Thank you so much. It is such a lovely set, and I treasure it....is their any indication of the age by any chance?
-
That catalogue was edited for 1968 Leipzig fair - most items of current production or new design for that special occasion, therefore absolutely 1960ies.

That makes sense Pamela, because I have had it about 30 years now, and it looked very new when I bought it and had been used very little.....I have only used it a couple of times because I felt I would never get any replacements if any got broken, so really, it is in pristine condition, I'm pleased to say.
Thank you so much for your help on this....now I know it is a Bohemian?? (is that right?) set by EITHER Schwepnitz OR Bernsdorf OR Sachsenglas, and made in the 60's. Yay!! :rah:
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou :kissy: .....and if you want any photos for your archives, please let me know, you will be very welcome.
-
No it's East German.
-
It's lovely to see you're so pleased, Rosie!
Your nice set is of GDR German Democratic Republic origin, i.e. Saxonia :)
I'm just now writing a mail to Mr. Anger of DDR-Design-Depot to probably obtain more details on the producing works and the designer - I return to you with his answer.
Mr. Anger has contributed to glas-musterbuch here: http://www.glas-musterbuch.de/VEB-Sachsenglas-1954.177.0.html

Thank you Christine, and thank you Pamela.....how nice that you are taking this much trouble.
I have looked at the files you have sent Pamela, and oh how I wish I spoke German.....you have such a wonderful command of English, I feel so humble....But, on the plus side, I speak fluent Swahili....but not very useful!!
Pictures are yours when you say the word. :fwr:
