Title: Amber cased spatter vase with aventurine(?), maker?
Post by: Bonsaismurf on April 03, 2011, 08:33:08 PM
Heya!

If anyone can pin down a maker for this vase I'll be impressed. I've been googling my bum off for the last couple of days without success. The best I can come up with is Franz Welz but it doesn't seem to be a match either. Anyway, it's cased in amber over white with green and red spots and trailings. There's internal ribbing and the green trailings glitters, I guess that's aventurine? The green spots doesn't glitter though. Help? Pretty please? :)

Btw, it's 21cm high and 8cm across.

Best Regards
Emil

It could be Welz.  I have another in a different colour way that looks remarkably similar with the trails going under the base and the faint stripes which appear to be internal.  Is the rim cut and polished?  I wonder what Craig will think?

Thanks for the input!

Yup, the rim is cut and polished. The reason I'm not sure it's Welz is because of the ribbing (Welz looks darker and with dual stripes) and because I can't find the shape. Then again, I don't know how well documented Welz production is.

Hello, Nice vase....
I would be very interested in seeing an image of the mouth of the vase if possible, showing the internal ribbing you are referring to.......... and also a very large closeup  of the bottom half of the vase from the side showing the decor well. That could be emailed directly to me if you want using the email icon on the side.

I will reserve any opinion until I have additional images.  Welz is not all that well documented at this point, at least publicly. The website I have been working on will likely contain the largest amount of Welz documentation in any format.  I do not have a record of this shape, but that does not mean much at this point.  I also do not have a recollection of this shape in a Kralik decor.

Welz does have a decor which has been dubbed "Translucent Lines" which is a similar line like this piece shows.  This is a different decor than the "Vertical Lines" you are referring to, which is much better known and recognized at this point.

Would it be OK with you if I copied and used your images on a website project I have been working on for the last 18 months or so?

I look forward to additional images.....  This is a very pretty vase, regardless of who made it.....

Craig.

Sure, more pics are on their way. Use them (and the ones posted here) in any way you prefer.

Hi Emil, I would lean strongly towards Welz as the maker for this piece. There are several things that point me in that direction.

The first would be the use of the translucent lines in the decor, combined with the internal ribbing which is involved in achieving the effect. The yellow and orange piece in the images has the same effect in it.

The use of colored "spots" on the lower portion of the vase in conjunction with the translucent lines.

They also seemed to really like the use of the green glass with mica, creating the green aventurine look.

Also, the style of the base on the piece, using what I refer to as a reverse bevel at the foot.

Any one of these factors by itself would not be a strong indicator to me, but as a group they leave me pretty confident attributing the production to Welz.

I am including images of 3 pieces in variations of the translucent lines decor..... two with spots or smears and one in pink with streaks (Miranda's).  The final image is a piece with an FWK label on it.

Yours is the first I have seen that uses the streaks and spots in conjunction with the translucent lines..

Hope this helps.... I think it is a really nice example of a late 20's early 30's decor by them.

Excellent work, Craig! The pink and yellow vases does seem to have a strong connection to my vase.
