Hi Chris, :hi:
I'm tempted to go for Arnaldo Zanella....who were you thinking it might be?
-
It is a pretty bird. Zanella did some with a similar base, but the ones I've seen by him were flat across the bottom, instead of having the concentric circles that Chris's bird has. The things I've seen by him have been signed. I don't know if he made things that weren't signed or had bases like this. Chris and I talked earlier about the possibility of La Serenissima. They had some figures on bases like this.
-
Hi Rosie, seen Zanella with similar base but not with the concentric rings.
A good source suggested la Serenissima?
Prefer your suggestion though

Hi Chris, :hi: I always thought La Serenissima made chandeliers......do they make birds as well, and if so, who is the artist??

Interesting that their website says
Direct producers since 1984, after having had for over twelve years experience in handling Artistic Venetian Glass, we learned a considerable know how in planning, producing & forming Lamps, Chandeliers, Ceiling Lamps, Table & Floor lamps and whatever decorative lighting entirely hand made and mouth-blown glass in Venetian-Murano Style.
No mention of their lighting actually being made in Venice...even though their trading address is Venice. The company has fewer than 10 employees as well.
Sounds like a brand to me rather than a manufacturer...

I noticed that, too, LS. I didn't know if it indicated that some of their glass may be from elsewhere or if it is just the awkwardness of translation. Another possibility is the nuances of language. Italians may say things in a way that wouldn't be typical for people in other countries. I don't know anything about the company. I have pictures (not mine) of a few of their animals. Some of the animals are pretty good. If this bird is by them, it is the nicest figure I've seen.
-
I checked the labels on the pictures I have. They have the winged lion of St. Mark and read "La Serenissima, Murano, Made in Italy." So maybe their glass is made in Murano.
-
But equally maybe not, as we know La Serenissima has its office in Murano...

Here is a pretty, unsigned bird that is on the same type of base. This bird looks a lot like Zanella's work, but I would be hesitant to attribute without a signature. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260771132654 The bird reminds me of the Zanella bird that is in the zoo, except the zoo bird has a flat base and is signed. The zoo bird is at http://sites.google.com/site/muranozoo/birds-reptiles-2.
Added a few minutes later: There's another bird with a similar base and beak as Chris's bird at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200592341627. Another generic label. Rats! I have a feeling these birds will be hard to trace to makers.

Thank you Anita for your time and effort, think you may be right unless a labelled one comes along.
