7.5-in blown vase with satin finish and rough pontil mark. No other marking. Quite thick glass.
Who dunnit and when? I know the answers but I'd be interested to hear what anyone else thinks (but not Sue if she can remember the answer).
And you can't cheat by looking at my gallery...
-
I'll have a punt - the outline shape of the 'white' markings look almost Maltese? (Mtarfa' ish)
-
No ;D
No clues yet
-
Yes what Paul said :ooh:
-
Still no :sun:
-
is it BW? :hi:
-
Who dunno it --
The Easter Bunny............lol....................or was in Made in the Easter Islands ?? :spls: :thud:
-
Is Sue a clue? :tof:
-
No, but she's seen it and might remember the answer.
-
I do. :smg:
Same maker as my clock. :sm:
-
I thought the shape of the piece looked a tad like R. Brierley. I think Dartington flog clocks, but don't see this piece being from them somehow. :ooh:
-
alum bay?
-
Alum bay too from me ;D
The clocks are nice if it's these.....

clue please - is it British?
-
Yup.
:sm:
-
I don't know anything about this kind of thing, but I did see a Norman Stuart Clarke (?) small vase with similar decor for sale on ebay when this thread started, but I do not think he would design a clock, as I say, I do not know much about this kind of thing. But I may start a quiz thread myself, inspired by this one for a piece I have just managed to attribute...

Mike Hunter?
m
-
No, sorry. Perhaps not so much a who as where exactly
-
Is it Stourbridge?
-
No. This comes from a particular place rather than an area where there was a lot of glassmaking companies.
-
Is the colour indicative of the maker, or does he/she use all colours?
Rosie. :sun:
-
"there was a lot "............tut tut........standards slipping now I see. How about Gateshead..........or Lynn.?
-
Is it Guernsey Studio Art Glass????? Even without the frilly top?????
Rosie. :sun:
-
or Gibraltar glass?
m
-
Paul's closest with his first answer
-
............well, obviously it's not going to be Moore, Davidson or Soweby..........so I think the answer must be in Hajdamach's C20 British glass - one of the studio makers up the back of the book.
-
The answer isn't in Hajdamach. The place in question only gets two very brief mentions.
-
hartley wood?
-
Second that, more noted for the swirly stained glass pieces

Far more recent than Hartley Wood!
It is in the index of Hadjamach, but it's also hard to fathom.
-
Still going up to a few ago at the Millfield site under Sunderland glass not really sure what they were making then but were making this sort of stuff.

I think Hartley Wood finally closed in 1989. Chris is close. This came from the the National Glass Centre in 1998/9 and was made in the studio there.
-
:pb: Ooops, I didn't know that about Hartley Wood - I thought they had closed much earlier.
-
I think they did and were resuscitated for a bit
-
ooh good quiz!! What size is the vase Christine and who made it? is there a particular designer or blower?
I didn't think Hartley Wood did close before shutting for good, but that they had a last attempt to try something new near the end before shutting for good. I'm still convinced the two vases I have are both Hartley Wood 'gift ware'. I've seen two more since on Ebay, both very similar to mine and purporting to be from Hartley Wood. Chris as a matter of interest what is the size of that vase please?

The one in the second link with the 'stained glass' pattern is a later Sunderland glass one 8" high some were stamped HW on the base.
The ones I like are the earlier swirly ones with the kicked out base, rough pontil marks uneven rims and bases and loads of stray bubbles.
Here are some below..........

Some really early ones with one of the later style in the back ground
