Title: Old Cut glass Lamp base

I picked this one up from a demolished building site. An old night club to be precise. That sounds rather suspicious but it's true.  :)

It has the numbers 4847 impressed on the base of the metal. 10.5 inches high.

I've had it for a while and I'm not sure if I like it or not. I'm just curious to know where it came from and how old it is. Any ideas?

Oil lamp base c 1920/30's I'd guess. Are the 7's crossed or plain?

I actually felt quite embarassed to own an incomplete lamp so I resisted putting it on the GMB.

I looked on Ebay yesterday and found a whole whack of them with parts missing at decent prices. The glass on my lamp base seems fairly boring though in comparison.

The 7 is not crossed.  :)

I think it's the relative simplicity of the design that makes it quite appealing, though.  :)

It is the bases and shades that make the money, burners are dime a dozen and chimneys are still being made.

Victorian bases fetch the best money. Good shades are like gold dust, I used to be able to sell the better ones for upto 2 or 300 pounds in the 1980's. Victorian Bases would sell between 50 and 150. Never found a complete one. There was not much of a market for 20th century ones back then.

Or at least that is what I would assume if I saw a crossed 7 on a piece. :lol:
