Title: Art Deco vase Czech or French?
Post by: madhatterrus on May 06, 2011, 12:54:54 AM
Hi all,

I wonder if someone could enlighten me on this vase's country of birth and age. I bought two vases from the same source but the previous owner couldn't share any info on them. One vase was marked Czechoslovakia Tchecoslovague which I believe is a Czech export mark for French market. I'm sorry I don't have a picture of it now but the vase was very Art Deco, kind of Lalique style, with molded fish on frosted glass.

The second vase is unmarked but as they came from the same source I thought they both might have been bought in France (and I bought them in the UK). The question for me is whether the second vase is French or Czech. Also, am I right dating it roughly to the 30s?

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome to the board!

This vase is Czech, from Inwald's Barolac line. Catalogue no. is 1918 or 1925 depending on the width of the rim. Your vase looks closer to #1925 in the 1934 catalogue (Thanks to SG at pressglas-korrespondenz.de). The vase was designed in the 30s, but many Barolac patterns remained in production for decades so it's hard to date your vase accurately.
