Title: Bohemian or Chinese ?
Post by: Roger H on May 09, 2011, 06:12:18 PM
Hello again, hope your'e all spending plenty of money so as to keep the world finance afloat !!!!!!!
Spent a very small amount of my hard earned cash on this not bad weight. It was advertised as Bohemian but I didn't really believe it, more likely chinese, but still worth the money. There was no base photo just one oblique photo.
The base description was flat polished which was true but it was like a later polished, chinese base. I have no complaint about the seller at all but would be interested in your opinion as to origin. Regards Roger. :24:

Hi Roger

I am fairly sure it is 20th Century Czech (ie Boho). Certainly not Chinese. What you have to take in to consideration is that there are quite a few similar weights made in the 1960s at Pilkingtons, in St Helens, Lancashire (UK for non-Brits), by Czech workers.

Well I'll be jiggered (don't know what it means). Are we talking about Pilkington glassworks where Czeck workers made these ? Officially or not? No wonder its a decent looking weight. Regards Roger.

I don't think Alan was saying your weight was definitely one of those made at Pilkington. He did say he thought it was "20th century Boho" (meaning Bohemian, of course).

See also this thread "Question of Origin (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,24320.msg135518.html#msg135518)" for comments on another style of weight that is believed to have been made by Czech workers at Pilkington (as well as other countries), but certainly denied by the Pilkington management.

I have a selection of weights, mostly sourced within 20 miles of St Helens that I suspect were all made at Pilkington's

I must say that Pilkington was my reaction to Roger's weight

Thank you all for your info and the links provided, I have visited them all and because I haven't been on the message board hadn't realised the Bohemian possibility without coming from Boh area. I guess if I knew how to make a weight with a goodly amount of precision as these I would seize an opportunity to do so also, seems reasonable. Regards Roger.
