This has just been listed on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220785390240&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123
The seller is in Italy and is adamant that this is Murano Glass.
I have a collection of these little birds, and have always been led to believe they were made in China.
Am I correct or mistaken?
Some proof would be very helpful......thanks in advance for any information on this glass bird.
-
Hi Rosie
I was always in the same belief as you :or:

:hi: Well i know not , but i can say they have been around for very many years , even before the Chinese started wacking out all the modern glass .
-
The Chinese have been wacking out glass for many years...These small items are ideal for homeworkers.
-
Looking through our local auction site yesterday I noticed there were around 700 items listed as Murano - and perhaps 10% was actually Murano.
-
Does anyone have any reason to believe that they are Murano?
I have seen them listed as Isle of Wight, Langham, Wedgwood and Murano. As End of day glass, Slag glass, Millefiori and Art glass. They all have the same smooth but not shiny pontil mark on the base, and I have many with the Labels still attached. A lot of them have the labels removed or defaced to be unreadable, but the ones I have say Made in China. They come in a variety of colours, but are basically the same size, shape and general form.
I actually like them, and they are cheap enough to collect....however, some that are listed as Murano or Vintage Murano are way overpriced.
Just out of interest, these are the ones that are currently listed worldwide on eBay:

Rosie was that your collection listed recently with the excellent description saying;
"They are Made in China.
They are NOT Murano.
They are NOT Langham.
They are NOT Wedgwood or Wedgewood.
They are NOT Isle of Wight.
THEY ARE CHINESE."
Must say gave me a good chuckle when i saw it

Yes Michelle it was! I was so fed up with everyone misdescribing them, so I put that on when it was free listing...at £2000.00 (so it wouldn't sell!) in the hopes that some sellers would see it and think carefully about their own descriptions! :24:
-
ahhh so it is you bidding on my Kiwi... :smg:.
I read it after you bid and had a good chuckle, and was pretty sure after that it was you.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! Michelle..... :-X

opps sorry :pb:, although it is already in the marketplace. Foot .. mouth, never the twain shall meet again, that is untill i open the latter then up comes the foot straight away :24:
-
So please, does anyone know a good reason why we should believe these little glass birds are Murano.......Pleeeeeeze???? ;D
-
Because everything hotworked is made in Murano and that word sells stuff... :24: :24: :24:
-
I bought one today with a Made In China sticker for you :)
-
Hi m, it is lovely....I really like them.......do you?
May I refer to your photos if necessary please?
-
Honestly? no birds are not my thing really , but this one, I have to say, has some beautiful colours in it and is very pretty. I'll list it probably, but as Chinese :sun:- I just knew I had to buy it (hoping from memory it was the same kind you were discussing) so there was proof :rah: yes, of course it's fine to use the pics and they are in this thread anyway.

They all have lovely colours and I am not the least bit worried that they are made in China....I like what I like, and don't like what I don't like, if that makes sense? :usd:
Was it one of the ones on eBay? Wouldn't it have been a hoot if it was one I was selling m? :24:
-
No, I just picked it up today - have you got ones with labels then? I thoughts you hadn't which was why you couldn't convince people they were Chinese. or did I misunderstand and spend money I needn't have ::)
m
-
Hi m, yes, I have ones with labels....there is a pic of one label on the eBay listing I had......did you pay a lot for it, and was it new or from a second hand source? I ask because they keep getting described as Vintage!!
I find that because they are in different colours, unless I have one of each colour with a label, the seller will say 'That's not the same as mine....mine is Murano / Langham / Wedgwood / Wedgewood (aaaagh!!) / Isle of Wight!! :thud:
Let me know if you list it....you never know, I might even buy it!
-
Are you going to list this lovely birdie m? I am waiting to nab it!! :sun:
-
Rosie, can you send me a pm through the email system please?
thanks :sun:
m
-
Hi m, sorry, not sure what a pm is and I haven't got your email address....mine is there if you want to forward yours to me. OK?
-
Hi Rosie
your email address is currently hidden even though it probably looks open on your monitor - I have just opened mine so you should be able to click on the envelope under my user id on the left of this post and send me an email ...I hope.
thanks

Rosie is your Kiwi(I assume you got it) a real Hokitika kiwi(see my wife's example that is 30 years old or so). Do you know they make a sleeping Kiwi as well - we bought ours at Hokitika in January this year? Most Hokitika products have labels only.
Ross
-
Hi Ross :hi:
I have got 13 kiwis now....some are Hokitika labelled, some are without labels and some are Schroders......have you heard of them?
You might have unwittingly solved a problem for me though!!
I have a frosted Hokitika Kiwi, and a frosted 'sleeping bird'. I have never connected the two....but I think you may have given me reason to think the sleeping bird is a Kiwi!! I have just this minute noticed a very faint mark on the base of the sleeping bird....it says Fostoria....never heard of them!!??
Have a look and see what you think.
-
Rosie look up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fostoria_Glass_Company which I have heard of for table glass. Also http://www.fostoriaglass.org/fgsamus.htm gets you to the USA Fostoria Society. Finally http://antiques.about.com/od/elegantglass/a/aa072702.htm looks interesting if only for the links.
Just found this for Schroder's http://www.finda.co.nz/business/listing/q9yz/schroders-handblown-glass-ltd/ turns out they are just round the corner from Hokitika Glass literally - I missed finding them when I was there.
Finally I agree it is most likely meant to be a sleeping Kiwi.
