Title: Signed MS'80 New Zealand Artist?
Post by: squizoid on May 25, 2011, 02:53:22 AM
Hi, found this today, 15cm tall, 14.5cm across the rim. Signed MS'80. The rim has been crimped all the way around. May not be NZ artist but that is where I live so....???

Kia ora, Tony.  Anything is possible, but I don't recognise this at all.  None of my Mel Simpson pieces is marked MS, and neither the form not the colours in this look like any pieces of Mel's I know. Nor can I identify any NZ glass artist working in 1980 apart from Mel with those initials.

I'll be really interested to see if from anyone who can identify this, though.

As far as I can see the only possible starter in Australia is Michele Super who was a Victorian Glass artist mentioned in Ausglass Magazine of 1980.  This is the only piece I have.  I will have to work on the signature but with care you can probably see the initials.

Victorian being from Victoria of course, not late 19th century

Absolutely Christine.  I perhaps ought to have said Melbourne.

By the way, when did you last see a "Victorian" Bowl that looked like mine - no one would have allowed such a simple "Unfinished" piece to leave the works, surely.

???

Just thought I would mention there is a Glass vase on Ebay marked MS 1989 -- but not much more info than that.   HERE  (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&item=300540201418&nma=true&rt=nc&si=%252BmEG5unqEoRH4s%252BSa2Pa2996dx4%253D)

Here is another Vase marked MS 1987 here (see the 5th item down) *Here  (http://www.backalleyantiques.com/Art%20Glass.html)

    Not that is helping with the ID at all, but at least finding some more examples ( I think), if that helps at all  :thud:

Hi all, thanks for all the input. Rose, very well spotted, so it may be American? the M looks more pointy on mine...but I guess things can change over 7yrs. They all have a similar mottled effect, but mine has these brown marks throughout the glass, could this have happened over time? they just don't look right with the white and lilac colours of the mottled effect.

Remember that 1980 was comparatively early days for studio art glass.  Maybe the maker used something to colour the glass that is affected by water giving the brown colour.  Your vase does not look like a USA product.  The finish even in 1980 was generall much better over there.  I would guess NZ or Australian is most likely.
